I know that view.  That's the field where my sailboat came from.  It was just off to the right, out of the frame.  Covered in faded blue tarps...

Dennis Orme Shaw, GALWAY HOOKERS, 1960s



The largest hookers, Bád Mór, were 35- 40 feet, open and used to carry turf (for fuel) and maybe the occasional keg of poitín (the local hootch) across Galway Bay from Connemara and County Mayo to the Aran Islands and the Burren.  Hulls preserved with tar (black) and the canvas sails dipped in a heated solution of red bark and tallow ('barking"), giving them their distinctive dark red color.

A lovely composition.  But it is remarkable, for it is unusual in paintings for the subject(s) to give the artist the stink eye.  Photographs yes, but in paintings, rare.   

So imagine the poor artist, perched on the wildly tossing bow with his pallet and lap easel trying to capture the moment.

The individual pieces are sods. "A sod of turf"

Those boats are still sailed, and even raced.

One of 2 that I got from an estate around 30 years ago. Butterfly wings as the background. I gave the other one to John P., the property manager for Fred Trump, Donald’s Dad. He hated Don so much back then because he worked so hard for Fred and Don just graduated from Wharton and got $10,000,000. John probably has more than Don now.
