I like this. It's in a friend's house. She's not a sailor. However her family owned and cruised a powerboat when she was young. Her parents had it in their house for many years. I think they knew the painter, Eugene Garin, Russian, died in California 1994. She says the two gulls represent the souls of the sailors in the boat. About ready to depart this earth I imagine.

Born is Switzerland but with German citizenship, Paul Klee spent most of his mature career in Germany, ending with teaching at the Bauhaus. He moved back to Switzerland in 1934 were he remained until his death in 1940. He was granted Swiss citizenship 6 days after his death.

Both in his youth and in his later years he spent a lot of his time at the Lake of Constance and sail boats on the lake must have provided a certain fascination for him.

He created over 9000 works of art in his life and with many as views of Lake Constance, sail boats are found throughout.
