We've been critical of marketing in the marine industry since our inception. Like many industries that revolve around a leisure activity, a lot of sailing businesses are run like hobbies, so much so that to do well, a company doesn't have to do anything particularly well - it just has to do it competently and predictably. And in no area is the sailing industry more backward than in marketing.

There are a lot of great products out there, but none of them will succeed without solid marketing. This thread - and perhaps a future media matters award - is for great examples of marketing. It was inspired by one that our own Peter Crawford from Penalty Box Productions put together for longtime advertiser Velocitek. This is the kind of shit that a good product needs to catch people's attention on a global stage, and if your company doesn't already have a YouTube ad to stick all over your online presence, you might could think about gettin' with the times. Call Petey, but he'll be busy until the America's Cup is over...

Here's another good example of what can be done for a few grand. This is the new Pacer 376 with designer Alex Simonis talking, a nicely done piece with compelling videography. Pacer Yachts here.

Feel free to add your own nomination here if you've seen an online video that caught your eye and made you say to yourself, "Wow - that was pretty fucking sweet!"

You fuckers too cheap to advertise on SA can add your videos here too.

Yo Clean, you do know that marketing is more than making eye-catching advertising materials, right?

Pretty good examples here.

I criticize the Velocitek clip for mixing action and text in a way that pulls attention away from both. Other than that, good.

Wonderful, clean is now an expert on marketing....his vast experience and success has now lead him to critique others....fascinating...

To further his cause, he's even taking the time to educate everyone on what good marketing really is: eyecatching videos...and how best to market to new advertisers: call them names.

Fascinating....

What is fascinating is that you have such a pathetic life that you can't even stay away for a week after announcing your departure from here at the top of your lungs. At least have the balls to attack without a sock puppet, something you've always railed against. What a punk.

SA, meet the newest version of Antony.

And yes, marketing is more than an eye-catching ad, but it's a start!

If anyone in the biz is looking for a much higher end video product to be filmed in the Annapolis area give a call to Fine Films. What is not on the site is that Andrea Fine is a sailboat sailor and former racer. Her husband is extremely good with any type of camera. If you look at their awards sheet you will see Sundance, Oscar noms, Emmy awards etc. Beyond that they are local and if they can fit you in their shoot schedule without moving around other projects I would think the cost is very competitive.

They have the capability for a much better product both stills and video compared to what I am seeing here.

Beyond actually shooting these web videos a consultation is well worth a small fee for anyone trying to improve their marketing. Because Clean is right. Very poor usage of the net from many companies. Back in 2003 when I worked on a project for Volvo we really gained a tremendous amount of knowledge by bringing in a few consultants. I have read that Bob Perry has a pretty good set up where he sends out an info / question packet and then sits down with the person. I believe he charges $100 hour. Probably more now. As much as people put down Clean, I would think getting an Attorney with his recent experience would be worth the fee.

That film was not produced as an AD. My intention was to report home from boot, Düsseldorf, to Nordic (Sweden, Norway and Denmark) using rolling pictures. But like any other video report as broadcasts there is some AD level on it even if we want or not. In above mention film gives me no paid from Pacer towards this shoot i got paid for

.
In the last couple of month i have been contacted by several firms which ask for a films which they can use on their web page. So i think the old way to buy AD now changing attitude.

How do you know it's Antony? I'm not saying it isn't, just wondering how you arrive at that from one post. This a technology thing or intuition? Cuz if it's a technology thing, put that facker to work and get rid of all the goddamn sock puppets. The whole site is becoming damn near unreadable. The AC forum is bad. Really bad. I know you and Scot tried to clean it up, but holy shit is that place diseased. Seems like theres a gazillion new IDs, and very little actual content in the forums these days.

this "sailing" anarchy is turning into one GIANT ad...(personal agenda)

good luck and good thing we can turn the channel.

I dont make my $$ from the sailing world and I don't care who does or doesn't..

Good LUCK to Clean ... I like some of the things you have done from "the core?" but your blatant personal commercialism (tiring) and pissing on others is pathetic(check your ego, Mr. Tool).

oh, F O old timer
