Melbourne Big Boat Fleet

On the subject of big boats; what has happened with the biggest one? Etihad Stadium must be thrilled with the coverage they got from Wharro's media hogging pre-Hobart fuck-up and then their humiliating race start that wasn't really a race start. A consolation bridesmaid appearance in the Coffs Race, no show at Geelong or anywhere since has hardly given them value for money in Etihad Stadiums own backyard. Remembering Wharro (allegedly) trousered around $AUD280k for his trouble, you'd have to ask; was it really a fuck up or was it all a sting?
Saw The Thing parked in the water at Noakes in Newcastle yesterday...

Went straight there after Coffs and hasn't moved or been touched since, bottom is filthy and the boat in general is looking a touch sad.

Maybe Club Marine are a little hesitant in giving a cover note this time.

I have heard there is a Corby 43 parked in the Royal's marina at the moment, boat calleed Full Metal Jacket. This boat was built in NZ around the same time as Flirt. Boat appears to have all the delivery kit on board with Dacron delivery, main and jerry cans etc.

I thought this boat is based out of Asia, ie Hong Kong?

Does any one know what is going on with this boat?

This Corby version looks quick in the light stuff with a finer stern section compared to the wider looking Flirt stern

Here to stay . Welcome Chris Mead. Should be a competitive addition to the Vic IRC fleet.

Much carnage in the CM Range on the Bay last Saturday with a three boat pile up resulting in SoD-U losing her rig.

We cross now to our man-on-the-spot, Anarchist Don seen above with the yellow assy and a degree of directional difficulty

So, tell us all, WTF happened Don?

(Steb Fisher photo)

And a special congratulations to the old 12m Kookaburra which revelled in the 18-20 knot northerly to lead the Div 1 fleet around the three lap course.

Waddya mean it was only a two lapper? Bugger!!!

As you are probably aware, I can't say much for now.

First, thankfully nobody was injured.

Second, the worst incident I've been involved in during the 45 years I've been sailing.

Third, that ends our season.

What a fugly situation - amazed there were no injuries out of this.

Sorry to hear of your foreshortened season Don. Tough way to finish up.

Anyone get any photos of B.Os almighty round up and shrimping session on the second run?

T'was a classic combination of way too much rag and way too little skill when a squirt hit and things went pear shaped in a big ugly keel out mast horizontal sort of way.

Holy shit, that's an incredible sequence of events.

These photos will come in handy for the protest room, some $ worth of damage!

Any witnesses out there to explain who was at fault, ie Stampede rounding up?

Is it just me or has anyone else thought recently why do the race organisers bother with Div 0 anymore? Only 3 finishers the last Range Race, with a number of boats not even out there.
The current Div 0 fleet status looks like this:

Cougar - Racing

Scarlett - Racing but Melb racing does not seem to be their focus.

Shogun 52 - Racing

Dolly - Racing

Flirt/Audi CM - For sale and not racing (rumour is it may be sold already)

Calm - In SYC yard and broken Not likely to be racing for several weeks.

Goldfinger - Not racing?

Terra - Racing sometimes

XLR8 - Racing but...

Shamrock - Never does Range series

With so little in the fleet, would they be better of combining Div 0 with Div 1 again like it used to be?
That was crap blending Sydney 38s and Beneteau Jay Doves with Grand prix boats . No one wants to see that again . But all the GP big boats must sail the majors.. They look fantastic blasting past under kite.

Wots happened to Rush and the TP52 Artemis that was suposedly purchased by Gtown high flyer late last year? Disappointing so few Div Zero boats fronted last couple of rounds of the Range . Poofinger and Flirt have no excuses . Scarlet has cleaned up Pt Lincoln and Calm is unavoidibly sedated of course. The Terra - Shamrock deal will help that fleet . Terra boys will sail the Cookson well , But still hard to see anyone get near the Tp rocket ship that leads the series now anyway. Claws seems to be a consistent class act. And now blowing Dolly away in line honours ? twice? Whats happening? Finally, Shogun, I hear still has some rock stars on board so must be up to speed soon .

Big boats in Melb.

The Tall ship Stadt Amsterdam is due at Fawkner at 0930 this morning I believe. Currently anchored of tied up tp St Leonards pier.

Could be a sight worth seeing if they put it all up this morning.
