I heard that Schuss got a bit fried by lighting in the SYC yard yesterday.

Double lightning strikes  will do that. Sympathies to Dennis and crew on the terrible loss of a fine yacht and hats off to the selfless group of SYC members who jumped aboard to fight the fire, initially to try and save Schuss and later to prevent it spreading to nearby boats until the fire brigade arrived. I would hate to think what might have ensued if this had happened on any other night but a twilight Thursday when there were so many people around to notice the smoke billowing out of the boat about 20 minutes after the lightning strikes.

I even managed to get "escorted" from the club grounds when I offered a slab as first prize for a competition I ran...I was proprietor of the first major online chandlery...Yepp.com...and the prize was for most prominent display of our stickers! It went crazy with stickers appearing all over the RGYC trophy cabinet...people being "stickered" into the portaloos...the lead singer of the band wearing stickers all over her body.....and my favourite....a call out on the PA system for a lost dog...answering to the name "Yepp!". Best ambush marketing exercise ever... but I got the boot (to the cheers of the assembled crowd!) plus the threat of legal action if the stickers were not removed.....Yeah...good times! ;-)
I have no idea what you are talking about couta .....

Someone thrown out of rgyc.......

Surely it would never happen, I mean the lions club burger people would never be that harsh...

Try as they might for all those years, Maccas and Hungry Jacks still can't replicate the taste or texture of a Geelong Lions Club burger...

A real treat tonight at Sandringham to catch up with a man who almost single handedly kept sailing in the public eye in this town throughout the 1970s and 1980s with his skillful journalism, unrivalled knowledge and absolute passion for the sport. I write of course of Ed Featherston, Yachting scribe for Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper in those heady days of IOR and JOG and long before the advent of social media. Still going strong, Ed is in town for tomorrow's passage race to Geelong, not as a media figure but as a sailor. Sailing in Melbourne owes Ed a great debt and I for one salute him.

Bit of history to explain re Sportscar Jr there Couta. Jr is taking some sailing mates and doing it on Eureka at the same age I was first allowed to take the family boat and do the regatta. In 1974, at age 22 my father gave me the keys to his venerable old Hood 23 and we did it the hard way, racing to Geelong in the JOG overnighter, starting at 7pm on the Friday and wandering all over the Bay before arriving sometime late on the Saturday afternoon. Let's just say, that sort of activity can create an impressive thirst.

Jack and his mates have it a bit easier with just the more direct Passage Race to get there.

It's quite important to me that he keep the flame burning - since 1969 I have done somewhere north of 45 editions of that regatta, some more memorable than others and some involving memorable people and events and perhaps some atrocities that may or may not remain in the folklore of the event. (A certain late 1980's dwarf-tossing incident at a well known Chinese Restaurant was fondly remembered at a recent wake by the brother of a dear departed friend)

Mrs Sportscar and I will be doing the Passage Race with some mates on another boat but we both think it important to give the youngsters a go so they can begin to write their own stories if this arm of the sport is to have any sort of meaningful future.
look forward to catching up with Mr and Mrs Sportscar and the Coupe over FOS.

Thanks Couta. The 5 guys, aged 22 and under, scored a line honours and  corrected time win in the final race to finish the regatta in 4th place in their division. Not too shabby when you consider that several of the team had never sailed on a keelboat until about 3-4 weeks ago. Craig from Salty Dingo captured them superbly in this wonderful shot... 272276860_5479741472053043_4579022070761353482_n (1).jpg

Good on 'em!  But as I reach for the Efudix, I recall that I also used to sail without a shirt at that age ...

Yep....I reckon most of us who've played this game for a while have had chunks cut out....it's a tough lesson to learn, but it's a message that will save lives!! Ta for the reminder!

Great to see a sizeable fleet of 40+ boats heading to King Island in the ORCV'S  race this coming weekend. Conditions looking light upwind at this stage but hey, it is Bass Strait so anything could eventuate.

Also notable and pleasing on this International Women's Day is that there will be more than 40 women racing - hope they have installed a few more Porta Showers / Loos at Grassy.

After ORCV posted an on-line spiel a couple of weeks ago about the new Scarlet Runner being a contender, I see that she is no longer on the entry list. Anyone out there have news of the big black beast after a fairly underwhelming effort at Lincoln Race Week? Steep learning curve for a boat that different is to be expected.
