Nah...it's a proven fact that black decks induce localised thermals contributing to higher pointing ability and at least a 1/2kt improvement in VMG....often the effect can allow code zeros to be carried on all legs (although notably, only on one tack!)

It would appear that this has been an issue for a long time in high level sailing. This informative article was first published in the July 1973 issue of Yacht Racing for the One Design and Offshore Yachtsman which I still have here. Enjoy the read; its worth it.
