That was a daily occurrence with my fraternal twin brother and me.
In the 50’s when we made up activities some how we thought it was fun to shoot a arrow straight up above us and see what would happen…lol … certainly a adrenaline rush
This meme reminded me of that

Why not? It's not like they're worn out, or anything.

OTOH the issue .45s on my ship in the Navy were a bunch of rattle cans. The slide lockup design keeps them fairly accurate but I thought it would be better to carry a bucket of them and throw them at an enemy rather than shoot them. Maybe the noise would scare 'em.
The one and only time I ever fired a pistol in my life was when I qualified on the Barretta M9 when I was in the Army. I even managed to get Sharpshooter, the middle rank. If I were a 2A fanatic, I would happily own one.

And before anybody starts in about the 9mm being anemic compared to a .45 just stop. I don't know about the average shooting victim, but if somebody shoots me with any handgun, anywhere on my body, I'mma gonna fall on the ground and act like I'm mortally wounded for any number of reasons. Maybe zombies will keep coming at you after being filled with lead, probably a Grizzly bear wouldn't care and keep coming but I think most people would react in the same way I would even if it was a .22 round. So fuck that 'stopping power' myth. That's why aim for center of mass and double tap. You do that and except in the movies, that's plenty enough to stop almost anybody. And in the rare event it doesn't stop them, that's why the magazine holds more than 2 rounds. Just keep on squeezing the damn trigger! The Barretta is relatively light has very little kick and you can re-aim quite easily after each shot. Try that with a .45, .357, or .44.

My brother had a Crossman BB gun that looked like a .45 pistol. We would shoot that and my Daisy rifle down in our cellar. The Daisy rifle had a much bigger spring and better range but at the 2' distance my brother shot me in the thigh from, it had plenty of punch. Good thing I was wearing jeans or I would have had a BB in my muscle. He claimed it was an accident but I had my doubts. Years later he 'fessed up and said he did it on purpose. He said he wanted to see what would happen. Asshole. Hell, he's still an asshole.

We also had bows and arrows along with some of our playmates. Who can resist the old shoot the arrow straight up! Luckily none of us ever got pierced.

It's a wonder that any of us lived to see old age. From an early age, we would go to Lake Erie, 2 short blocks from our house and play and swim with no adult supervision. There was more than one drowning in the area when I was growing up there. When these kids nowadays get old, they will tell stories about playing violent computer games! :D

You know how many of those folks I've ever encountered in my life? Keep in mind I worked in 2 trauma centers and out in the field as an EMT in gang ridden San Antonio, and on an in patient psych ward, and have traveled around a bit of the world. Do you know how many times I felt my life was being threatened?

The answer is never.

A little common sense and situational awareness is a valuable thing to have. As we said in the Army, stay alert, stay alive.

Nope, they are worn out and this has been an issue for a long time.
After a 10 year procurement study new pistols have been ordered for delivery later this year.

Curious if you've tried a modern, post-2000 Eleventy? What did you think?

I gave my SW1911 and 16 of my pet loads to a Korean War vet. After blowing the bull out of a 7 yard target, he put it down with a bemused look. "It kinda looks like a Government issued 1911A1, but it sure doesn't shoot like one."

That's called a Psychological Stop; and you're right, it's a real thing.

Except when it isn't.

There's a certain percentage of society that, for reasons of anger, mental illness, drugs, stupidity, or shear bloody-mindedness, will fight thorough an injury. Unfortunately, those outliers are statistically clustered in the elements that are far more likely to precipitate an attack. And kill.

I put my faith in training, practice, a capable round with a proven bullet, and a reliable weapon with a large ammo capacity. And reloads.

Read up on or YouTube search for the Miami FBI shoot out...
BTW I knew the Jerry Dove agent that took a .223 to the head while lying on the ground trying to reload his 9mm , if I recall his pistol had been nicked and he couldn't get the slide to work

The shooters both had been shot to pieces but keep fighting until the bleed out

No, I haven't done any shooting sport in years.

I bet the US military has bazillions of .45ACP stored various places. Wonder what they're going to do with it all.

Reloading is a fun challenge too, plus it's the only way to afford the sport.
