I have a Glock 23 .40. I judged it a reasonable compromise between recoil and impact. I shoot it once a quarter to maintain familiar and targeting proficiency. I’m no expert but I’ve seen lots of gunshot wounds of various caliber. My very humble opinion is what matters is how many rounds you can put center mass out of the first magazine not what the caliber is. I think “stopping power” is a sales pitch.

Yep! Teenage gangbangers put plenty of each other 6’ under landing a shot or two anywhere in the torso. Center mass ! Center mass! Until the threat is eliminated .

are 9mm guns built to handle 2000fps pressure? have to beef up that recoil spring..

also what powder in those loads? there's only so much room in that shell, i'd be afraid the powder would take out the gun if you had iffy brass...
Probably not. At least the factory guns. My competition guns run (what we call) "9 Major", which means a 9mm loaded to the ballistic power of a .45 I push a 124gr round at just under 1400fps. (.45 is stereotypically thought of as a 230gr bullet at about 750fps, aka "fat and slow") But the 9 Major gun s a custom 1911, designed and built for that load (and making it work involves more than just a recoil spring).

My carry gun is also 9mm, with factory ammo. I have no concerns about its effectiveness.
and to your last, there have been amazing advancements in powder in the last 10-15 years. There are a variety of powders out there that happily produce the pressures needed for "major" power, without filling the 9mm case and without getting into over-pressure range.

I bet the US military has bazillions of .45ACP stored various places. Wonder what they're going to do with it all.

Bit by bit the surplus 1911s are trickling out through the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program, used to be called the DCM). But where surplus M1 Garands can be straight-up ordered from CMP, so far the quantities of 1911s are so small that they're being put up for auction and generally are pretty pricy by the time you get through the bidding.

No idea whether surplus .45 ball is going to be released to CMP the way surplus .30-06 has been for years.

just watched a couple of videos on new defense rounds, i'll admit i'm 20 years behind on current technology... dang, there's some nasty stuff out there
There are more gimmick rounds than ever. The ultra light for caliber, ultra fast cartridges can boast high kinetic energy numbers but have little penetration. The shattering bullet is not all that either.
Frangible rounds and cutting petals don't deliver on the hype.
Lehigh Defense has bullets with tips that look like a Phillips screwdriver and seem to be proving themselves. Maybe even good enough to eventually replace hollow points.

Note: I've bumped-up the What's In Your Arsenal thread to move this Gunny thread drift where it should be. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Meme insanity.

My favorite SD round is the Hornady Critical Defense 124 gr 9mm. It has been widely adopted by LEOs, and has a good record of stops on the street. Most of the leading ammo manufactures have similar offerings. And a lot of other boutique mfgs are offering pure schlock.
