Civilian .45 and 9mm differs from military ammo in that military bullets are FMJ. Home defense ammo is not, and a lot more energy is delivered to the target regardless of caliber.Bought a Browning High Power the week after I turned 21. 14 shots are better than 7 or whatever the Luger held. Might not stop you in your tracks like the 45 though.

The LEO shot him point blank with a 12 ga slug in the center of the chest. The guy turned around and ran up a flight of stairs before expiring.
