The French RTW record is the Trophée Jules Verne which has a set start and finish line. If Hawaii were a better place to start, they wouldn't really care, because all the activity and racing happens from there, so it wouldn't be nearly as recognized to do an attempt from Hawaii. Start/finish in France is the traditional route and even then it barely meets the distance requirement so it's pretty optimized distance-wise.The intended start of the RTW record attempt was supposed to start and end in Hawaii. I wonder why the French never figured out that would be the optimum place to stage a RTW. Did he make some noise about getting the DEFIANT back to the Chesapeake and fixed up for a Bermuda record?
Also, not even sure Hawaii is the optimal place anyways. From Europe, you can catch the trades and a LP off Brazil and shoot down to Good Hope in no time. Hawaii wind patterns are not nearly as nice.
So that's why, along with a bunch of other more minor reasons.
