The reason that the Jules Verne starts and finishes where it does is that it gives a course length of 21,600 miles - which is the circumference of the planet
21,600 is the rule not the circumference of earth.
• To sail around the World, a vessel must start from and return to the same point, must cross all meridians of longitude and must cross the Equator. It may cross some but not all meridians more than once (i.e. two roundings of Antarctica do not count). The shortest orthodromic track of the vessel must be at least 21,600 nautical miles in length calculated based on a ‘perfect sphere’. In calculating this distance, it is to be assumed that the vessel will sail around Antarctica in latitude 63 degrees south.
• A vessel starting from any point where the direct orthodromic distance is too short shall pass one single island or other fixed point on a required side so as to lengthen his orthodromic track to the minimum distance.
• No starting point will be permitted more south than 45° south.
• 1 degree of longitude at 63° south will be taken as 27.24NM

As the independent authority established by World Sailing to provide standards and accuracy for record attempts, the WSSRC offers Performance Certificates for achievement in non-recognized categories, and world records for achievement in established categories.

Larson reports the WSSRC would award Performance Certificates for:
• First African American
• Fastest American
• First American Multihull
• 6th Person to solo non-stop in Multihull

Additionally, among the possible achievement for completing the voyage, Larson is seeking world records for:
• Fastest Solo Non-Stop Around the World Outright – 40 days
• Fastest Solo Non-Stop Around the World 60ft Anytime (Multihull) – no current record
• Intermediate Records (ex. Equator to Equator) – 29 days

How large is Earth?

Earth's circumference (the distance all the way around the equator) is 24,901 miles (40,075 kilometers). Its diameter (the distance from one side to the other through Earth's center) is 7,926 miles (about 12,756 kilometers). Earth is slightly smaller when measured between the North and South Poles which gives a diameter of 7,907 miles (12,725 kilometers). Earth bulges out a bit more around the equator than around the poles because of its rotation (spin).

even though they say it is an oblate spheroid, The"photos" of earth show a perfect sphere...

The Earth has a circumference of 21 639 nautical miles. That 21 600 rule has that value for a reason...

Sorry, i did not take the nm into account. 21600x1.2=25920.
pancake in space is a funny graphic. playing golf on the moon also a funny graphic.
The 2 100ft-ish trimarans that set solo round the world records in 2016 and 2017 both sailed 28000 nm. That is over 6000 nm more than the rule requires. If someone started and finished on the tropic Cancer (Cuba for example), they could sail less distance than the current record holder. Also there doesn't seem to be a record for a solo nonstop record for a 60' tri. So the door is wide open for our fearless captain of the Defiant.

There's no record set because it's an insane thing to attempt. Just plainly asking to get yourself killed. If it were reasonable some French guy would've already been at it.
The ORMA 60s were replaced in large part because too fragile and too dangerous. Now we have Ocean 50s, which are much less prone to breaking and capsizing, and I don't think anyone's ever remotely considered ever taking those much safer boats around the world.

From a critical thinking perspective, this type of ball shape that they know the earth is, would be....? what specific shape are we going with.
Nasa shows a perfect sphere, the rules for the round the world race are based on a perfect sphere, Internet school type data claims the sphere is bulging at the equator( that means less distance from north to south than east to west, Neil Degrasse Tyson gives lectures saying that the sphere is bigger around at the bottom(that means more distance between longitude lines at 60 degrees S.)
It can't be all three. Either those are not real photos of the blue marble or Science teachers are giving out false info.
The racers seem to be spending a lot of time in the longitude 40s. It would be interesting to know what distance they use for 40 degrees south 1 degree of latitude.
63degrees is 27.24nm per degree in the rules figured on a perfect sphere.

There is a bulge to the Earth at the equator. Kinda like when you spin a slinky, it shoots out. Same thing but with a planet. But because it's a planet we're moving it's a pretty insiignificant bulge when compared to the size of the earth. The equator is only 43 km (27 miles) "higher" than the poles are. That ain't much, so a RTW race can safely assume a perfectly round earth while the astrophysicists and other can dive into the fun details.

I have a friend who is visiting Acapulco right now, and he reports the tri is half-sunk in the harbor. Filled with water. Sails still unfurled.

A sad ending….

I hope that is a troll too Clean. What an AssInSpace. BTW here is a live webcam grab and I think you can see DEFIANT at the top right in the anchorage.

Good idea to look at webcams. Found 2 that appear to show a big tri in the harbor. the second one is probably the one shown above.

Yup the merloe lives.

While we lie dormant over here, Donald has been cooking up some sick contracts in the studio.
You will notice he tags his "new unannounced partners" under the post...
Mark April 30th in your calendars everyone!

Hello to Everyone!
I hope you all are doing great!
It's time for an update!
As you can see from the images in this post, we will have a booth (Tent C15!) from April 28th to April 30th at the Annapolis Spring Boat Show!
You will be able to come down and meet me in person, share sailing stories, and see new footage from our program!
Not to be outdone -> on Sunday, April 30th at 2:30pm, I will do a live presentation at the boat show where we share the latest news, formally announce new partners and give updates on our outreach efforts we plan to achieve in 2023!
There are a few more things about the Boat Show(s)
😉
we can’t share yet, but trust me, it will be worth the visit!
From here, a big thank you to our donors and partnerships, which have grown significantly over the last month! I can’t wait to make some formal announcements to the world at the Boat Show!
But for now, I will drop little hints here and there about who they are and what we plan to do with them!
Cpt Lawson
