I thought the term captain was only used for skipper/helm of a pleasure craft in limited scenarios. The only time I am certain it is ok is situation such as when a dockmaster yells " turn the helm the other way, captain" where it is clear to everyone that 'captain' is a polite substitute for 'dumbass'
Also, seems odd he refers to the boat as "The" Defiant... could be regional but none of the serious sailors I know use "the" before the boat's name.

I cleaned boats during the summers in high school. Only one client referred to himself as "Captain." His (power) boat never left the dock, and no amount of cleaning was going to bring her back from the condition she was in. But at least he paid the bill, unlike the dude with the 50+ foot Chris Craft.

This is clearly a job for @multihuler !!!
He's busy bringing back a 43x24 Farrier catamaran from the Arctic to a berth in your neck of the woods

I was somewhat worried about his weather window but now I'm really worried about this......

Cheers,
Captain,

This has been really eye opening for me. I am shocked by how many individuals and organizations seem to have fallen for this. I mean the extent of what seems to be complete BS is so widespread that the most basic diligence seemingly would have raised red flags. Just my opinion and maybe I am missing something but wow. I went into the wrong line of work.

Anybody know the current status of the ex-Might Merloe? Did it ever get hauled out, or, is it still sitting in the water with a Harbor Freight tarp covering the damage?

Loe Real was the Waterworld try: Loe Real

Might Merloe was of the same design firm, but is a newer boat having been built in 2014: Mighty Merloe

One can see from the photos of the respective boats that they have different cross beams.

The VPLP article is a bit wrong - the filming group screwed up (supposedly) In the scene where the tri is blown up the trick/interior shots boat was to be destroyed. But the full sailing boat was the one blown up instead. She was somehow delivered to SD where she sat for many years with the movie spar (with four cross beams). Finally their was a lot of interior carbon work done installing the necessary bulkheads etc to hold a real spar. A surplus ORMA spar was shipped in from Europe & the tri finally got underway as a proper sailing boat.
The original boat, Pierre 1rst, became Fosset's "Lakota" and did two TranPacs & a number of Mexican races before being sold when Fosset crashed his plane. Now sailing ahain as "Flo" in the RdR

I believe it was also Primagaz between Pierre 1 and Lakota?

Edit: Opps, not Pierre 1 but a development of her. Primagaz began as RMO
