Mike Plant - Project Coyote the Movie

This is a nice story to start the New Year...

It's special to see Mike Plant's legacy running so strong on Lake Minnetonka.. the birthplace of his adventures. The new Mike Plant Sailing Center is on track to be completed this summer, ready to connect children as young as 5, including underprivileged youth, to the water and sailing.

Mike's mother, Mary Plant and the devoted team at Wayzata Community Sailing Center (cc: Matthew Thompson) - along with an incredibly generous army of supporters - have made this dream come true. Inspiring!

I just got word that the French American Yacht Club is hosting a showing of the film at the Tribeca Film Center on January 14 at 6:30 pm.

I am excited to get to see it for the first time, and on a big screen, so if you happen to be going to the screening make sure you say hi to the fat, old guy with motivation to burn (thanks, Jack Sparrow!)

This documentary is GREAT on a movie screen. I thought the big screen really added to the movie, but then when I saw it, the theatre was filled with Mike's family and supporters .

Well, saw the movie on Monday at the Tribeca Film Center, thanks to the French American Yacht Club.   It was outstanding. An incredibly inspirational and cautionary tale, really well told.

The American Sailing Association, the leading authority on sailing instruction, recently connected with Thomas Simmons, Director of COYOTE: The Mike Plant Story, to discuss all things Mike Plant and more.“We’re proud to announce a new video series called “ASA’s Inside Sailing,” where we conduct on-camera interviews with prominent and/or interesting figures in the world of sailing.

In our inaugural episode, we spotlight Tom Simmons, Director of Coyote: The Mike Plant Story. In his feature length documentary Simmons delves deep into the life of American solo-sailor Mike Plant who was both an extremely daring sailor and a very compelling character. In our interview, we ask Simmons (also the nephew of Plant) what he learned about sailing, film making and himself after the immersive process of directing this extraordinarily well-made and in-depth biography.”

Mad it goes way beyond just individual participation which in the US is heading to the basement. On the building, manufacturer and technology front the US has literally disappeared off the map. Be it a Navtec, Hall Spars etc the list of dissapearing pioneers many 4 and 5 decades old has been growing for years. The offshore world in particular is now Euro centric both technological and participation. It now won't grow without the US waking from the dead.

As I said Plant who flew the US flag with pride would be rolling in his grave.
Jack is absolutely right here. Trying to prep my boat for a solo non-stop, the lack of expertise in getting a boat set up properly is rapidly dwindling here on the US West Coast, if it ever even existed. I suspect there is a cadre of knowledge up in Maine that helped Rich Wilson, but other than that good luck to those of us Americans trying to make it around. Making it up as I go along. Yes, Newport was forming a knowledge base in the 80's, but the offshore expertise is clearly in Europe these days.

I love one of my erudite quotes months ago getting bumped. Mate many may think we are both related though. :)

Great documentary. There was a theme not a like that of Crowhurst in that he left in a hurry with the boat not yet ready owing people and being forced (by himself) to proceed. Unlike DC, MP wasn’t a phony but a full-on adventurer!

Overjoyed to hear the news! Wayzata Sailing will have its Grand Opening of the MIKE PLANT COMMUNITY BOATHOUSE on the shores of Lake Minnetonka on June 7th!

This beautiful building honors Mike Plant's legacy and commemorates the hard work and care that his mother, Mary (pictured), has invested for countless years.. ensuring scholarships for young sailors and fostering experiences for many that only sailing can teach. Bravo to Mary and all of the good people involved!

Watched last night - on GooglePlay (I think) at home.  Good story, not a perfect movie (critics will always be there...good PointsEast article online with a critical view of the film), about not a perfect person - like all of us - hence the appeal of (one of) Plant as a character. And his incredible energy and attitude - him building Airco (wow!!), the first boat; later setting off (for which race and on which boat I can’t recall) with large debts and with no hopes of prize money...just going for it!    Dangerous sailing.  Incredible drive and attitude.

Definitely worth watching, even by those with zero interest in racing.

I'd take her review with a grain of salt...

It sounds like Molly Mulhern read my review (October 30, 2017) that was posted on the Front Page about this movie.

https://sailinganarchy.com/2017/10/30/the-best-sailing-movie-ever/

Molly Mulhern post: "And on the movie rolls, to the dramatic scenes we all know are coming"

My post: "The film moves on to the building and loss of Mike’s last boat, Coyote. This was a somber section as everyone knew what was coming."

Also, Charlie Doane liked The Mercy which was not good at all. If someone liked All is Lost, than The Mercy is a film for them.

Well said!

My big takeaway from Coyote was that Plant was, understandably, an inspiration to many...and would’ve been to many more going forward, if not, sadly, for forces almost beyond his control...and therein lies the crux (I guess)...follow your heart, but be careful where it might lead you.

For the first time in two years I again watched Coyote: The Mike Plant Story. I found it just as good as when I watched it the first time two years ago.

However, yesterday, there was one very important thing missing that I felt the first time I watched this documentary. I included this thing in my original review that was posted on the Front Page in 2017.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

"The audience seemed filled with Mike’s family, friends, supporters, and those who knew him. Having so many people that were close to Mike in attendance allowed me to observe reactions to the film that would not have been otherwise."

For those who have not yet watched this documentary, you are really missing out. And for those in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries can watch Coyote: The Mike Plant Story for free on Tubi.tv.

Unfortunately, Tubi.tv is not available in the UK or EU countries.
