What say ye?

Had a discussion witha sailing friend on what is a good boat for the distance races like the GT 300, Tybee 500. I thought a good condition Miracle 20 with an ayso kite would do well in the distance runs. Everyone else was saying F18s, tornadoes, Nacra 20s, etc. Ive never raced a Miracle 20 but I have seen them in action and they look incredibly fast. Figured I'd ask the experts.......

it did the gt300 a few times back in the day. The biggest problem is it isnt built for a kite so you have to modify them a bit. The guy who did the gt on it put a running backstay on it to help the mast along. For my money id go an f18 for distance racing unless you're going for line honors.

Here in San Fran we have a few H-20's with kites. The F-18 is better than the H-20 kite that seeems to be the opionion of the sailors here that have owned both.

You can pick up a good used N20 for bargain basement prices these days. F18 is more versatile, because their are larger fleets=more buoy racing. Some work has been done on updating the N20 rig but that is controversial. The F18 is now faster because of improved rig and hull shape. If you want the ultimate weapon, get an F20c.

I ran a H20 in the GT300 with a Tornado kite in 05. We put a back stay on it from the spin bail to the rear crossbeam (outboard/windward). When running down wind, my back was resting against the backstay line and I could feel the flex the comptip was getting....it was a bit unnerving. The boat worked ok but it wasn't realy made for a kite. If that's what you have, run what ya brung. The F18 kite is better for that aplication (smaller/more evolved shape). Switched to N20...much easier boat to sail well with a kite. BTW, the bows didn't stuff any worse than a Tiger.
