On Friday, New South Wales Health issued a public health alert after a probable case of monkeypox was identified in a recently returned traveller to Europe.
 
Meanwhile, the Victorian government has confirmed the state recorded its first case of monkeypox in a returned overseas traveller who developed symptoms prior to returning to Melbourne.
 
Both NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant and Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton have said the virus is not easily spread between people and will usually resolve on its own within a few weeks.

Health officials around the world are keeping watch for more cases because, for the first time, the disease appears to be spreading among people who didn’t travel to Africa. They stress, however, that the risk to the general population is low.

Monkeypox can be fatal for up to one in 10 people and is thought to be more severe in children.

People exposed to the virus are often given one of several smallpox vaccines, which have been shown to be effective against monkeypox.

But how will horse medications work?  Forget going to the doctor.  Go see a veterinarian.

One amusing bit I read recently involved it spreading amongst a group of polyamorous petri dish type folks.  Seems it is catching on as an STD, perhaps soon calling someone a poxy whore will be back in style?

Yes... The comedy writes itself but it's not a morality play. For the moment cases in the EU and NA are associated with "MSM" (yet another reason to avoid the news?), but that's not typical of the disease in Africa. It kills kids and young adults there.

the weighted average of the median age of monkeypox infection in Africa has evolved from 4 and 5 years old in the 1970s and 1980s to 10 and 21 years old in the 2000s and 2010s.

The case fatality rate for the Central African clade was 10.6% versus 3.6% for the West African clade. Overall, monkeypox is gradually evolving to become of global relevance. Surveillance and detection programs are essential tools for understanding the continuously changing epidemiology of this resurging disease.
