Kaleidoscope (Netflix) is a pretty good show so far. Classic Hiest movie led by Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) but done over 25 years.. An interesting twist is that the series can be watched in any order.

Watching the Netflix series, Babylon Berlin. It is set in Berlin in 1929, with a failing Weimar Republic and threats to the country from both militant right-wingers and Communists - not to mention organized crime. It takes a few episodes to get up to speed but it is wonderfully crafted. Excellent in all respects. One warning that applies to this and some other foreign-language series on Netflix, they offer both English subtitles and dubbed English. Don't choose to have both going since the translations are often very different. It is addictive - 5 out of 5.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I think I saw a documentary on YouTube a few years ago with the same premise. But I can't find the damn thing now. I think it was this one:

DW has this rude habit of removing content from its own YouTube channel.

I was exhausted yesterday and settled into bed at 8:30, looking for something mindless to watch. My wife had watched The Menu last weekend and it seemed perfect for the moment, so I checked it out.

It met my low expectations.

I liked the central conceit that "foodie culture", taken to its logical extreme, results in the extreme, cult-like following the chef inspires, with predictable results. Unfortunately, the movie concerns itself more with shocking the audience than exploring how that following came about. Instead, it chooses to focus on the chef himself and the diners, which would be fine except that all of these characters are two-dimensional caricatures of old tropes, so there's nothing left but spectacle.

As for the acting, Ralph Fiennes is fine. John Leguizamo is under-utilized. Nicholas Hoult is good. By far the best reason to watch it is to admire Anya Taylor-Joy's excellent acting. Her stunning beauty doesn't hurt, either, and the director spends a lot of time admiring her face and figure.

If you're looking for something meaty to tuck into, I'd give The Menu one Snagge out of five. If all you want is popcorn and junk food, it's a two-Snagger.

Went to see the new Avatar tonight - first time in a movie theatre since COVID. Highly recommended. The story is basically the US army going into the West in the 1870s to 'tame' the Indians, so nothing much special there. The production itself is remarkable. The quality of the animation/special effects is outstanding. Before the movie they were showing previews of upcoming blockbusters from Marvel etc - the contrast in quality of the animation/effects was startling. We saw it in 3D with special seats that move and vibrate to reflect what is happening one the screen. If you can get these, go for it. My wife's description was that at the beginning you noticed what the seat was doing but soon it just became part of the movie. I would give it 4.5 snags, would be 5 with a more imaginative story premise.
