Where I come from, teh richest guy was most likely to be driving the jalope.

Luckily, that is the case with most rich people, the vast majority of whom lead discreet, productive lives.

The pimps and kleptocrats with their fleets of private cruise ships and private 767's with 3 people on board give the rich a bad name.

The Brits have made an art form of status grading. People like these guys are called "Nouveau Riche" and are treated with well deserved disdain and contempt, not admiration & envy.

I have some connections (but not any actual cash ) to "old money" and they DO most certainly look down on the "nouveau riche". I am not sure if living in a beat up old cottage and driving a Volvo 240 with rust holes while sitting on millions of dollars is a good or a bad thing, but showing up in say a Navigator or an Escalade is like farting in church to them. Some of those types are "just regular guys" that happen to have a big bank balance and some of it can be the worst kind of snobbery. No matter what you do, no matter how much money you make, NOTHING but a time machine can go back to 1645 or 1901 or whatever and establish the family trust.

Want to see an example? Watch the Howard Hughes movie where he has dinner with Katharine Hepburn and her old-money family. They are going on about some vulgarity of the newly rich and how obsessed over money they are. Howard Hughes tells them basically where to stuff their old money. I can't remember the word-for-word, but it went something like "You all are born rich and have not one clue what it would be like to live without money for even one second".

The old money attitude has always amused me. It basically amounts to the longer ago it was that anyone in your family did anything useful, the higher your status. If great great gramps made the money, you are "better" than someone whose father made it.

They do have one saving grace over the Allens and Abramoviches though - taste. You are not likely to see those grotesque displays from old money, whatever else their faults.

Any of you cruise the Agean Sea in August? The motor yacht types even the fairly modest boat folks seem to have a pretty good program going. I didn't really notice much difference between the Sailing yachts and the power yachts regarding the activities the folks were involved in. The sailboats also seemed to have just as many minimally dressed women as the power boaters too.

The big difference clearly was the fuel bill.

The truth is these large sailing yachts actually motor most everywhere... unless the wind is blowing exactly the right way, we'd not risk it...

Private yachts would give you a bit more time... Charter yachts are run to a schedule...

We used to go trans Atlantic with and have charters waiting for us on the other side with as much as 24hrs turnaround. We couldn't afford 1.) to be late for the charter or 2.) risk any damage which would also disrupt the charter. So the engine option was less risk and a timetable achieved.

Then there is Mike jr. He is THE Vanderbilt family. Just ask him. Oh, and he flaunts all he has in front of anyone who will look his way. Never worked a day in his life.

Confidentiality is a HUGE deal in Superyachting & private jets, it would churlish of me to name names... The ones I've met of are mostly European & most people have never even heard of them... I hadn't either, until I met them at the airport, then took them to a totally obscene superyacht for 10 days charter...

Warren Buffet lives simply but controls lots of capital.

Paul Allen lives richly but controls lots of capital.

Both are at the nexus of economic dynamics. Both contribute (not really the precisely correct word) to essentially identical amounts of wealth distribution. The specifics may differ. Allen spends more on himself. Buffet spends less on himself but still delegates tremendous amounts to consumption indirectly.

Whether you take it as tasteful or not is not a reflection on the rich guy, it is a reflection on you.
