Mount Gay hats - better as tote bags?

I have never been one to wear a Mt. Gay hat so I have a few new ones hanging in the garage. Has anybody sent one with a sail to a tote bag maker like Sea Bags and had it incorporated into a tote bag? I figured that this could be done with a lot of sailing hats.

Good point. But maybe cooler as a part of a bag rather than a hat?
Well if not cool is zero, are we adding to not cool or multiplying it? I think that’s the real answer and will admit this may be an objective opinion.

However, you’d be asking someone to apply part of a hat as a decorative motive, that seems like trying too hard. If you were making the bag yourself out of just hat scraps that might work but you’d better drink lots of rum.

I don’t have my evening priorities straight these days, but I’ve got a canvas bag on my list of things to do, but it’s behind a star chart, a different canvas bag (brown paper bag replacement), and yet a different canvas bag. My stitching isn’t great so it’s going to be awhile.

Meh. I think it would look weird, but whatever.

Having said that.... if MG had given out small duffels/ditty-bags over the years, rather than hats, I'd probably use them rather than just stuffing them in a box in the garage, never to be seen again.

Good point on the bag. I use my Bacardi dry bag for the Melges 24 all of the time. I've never worn a MG hat.

I have an absurd number of hats, never worn. I will not drink MG, definitely not wearing the hat. I wonder if I sent it to a seamstress if that person could sew them into something useful, such as:
  • Body bag.
  • Boom cover.
  • ...
Yeah, cannot get past how much effort would be wasted on making a MG hat useful. Much prefer a wide brimmed, straw surf hat. Took half a season to learn how to keep one on while dinghy racing.

One of the most interesting scenes (and cool factors) I've witnessed sailing were two Byte CII's racing in a mixed Laser/ILCA (4/6/7) fleet. Both were in their late 70's. She was decked out in the newest hiking padded farmer johns, boots, neoprene jacket, gloves, and some quick dry gear. He was dressed in some type of REI quick dry chinos, gardner gloves, a seer-sucker shirt with bow tie, and a boater straw hat with a striped band. Later found out he had heavy rash guard shorts and long sleeve shirt under it all. They raced together often, friends, she looking like she was going for gold, he looked like he expected the RC to hand him a mint julep between races. Cool is what you make it.

jeez, what a bunch of snobs... don't like red hats, don't wear it, what you do, is take them down to the club when the jr's are having a regatta and hand them out, they don't care, they'll think they are cool, ..

don't drink MG? there are a lot worse rums out there.. don't like it? don't buy it, someone hands you a MG rum, you take it and say thanks...

Over there
I've got 2 MG hats left from '03 and '06. They are worthless as hats on a boat as they easily blow off you head. They are too shallow for my big noggin.

I don't remember the hats sucking as bad in the 80-90's...

When did they become uncool to wear exactly?

speaking of the hats: can I complain about HYC giving them out after 2019 transpac to anyone that wanted them? 100 hats for a couple hundred racers. even the dishwasher was wearing one.

Give it to the crew, with a second bottle of good rum so they know you appreciate them.

This, a heap of mine went to dingy sailing niece & nephews. they loved them and were the coolest kids on their river for a while.

If you took them back to kiwi land you must have been doing some good regattas overseas. And back in those days we were still drinking Coruba.

This is when Mt Gay hats lose their cool…
When the guys who who consider themselves to be the cool dudes wearing the red hats find out that any one can get one…

My gay’s marketing strategy has been brilliant. People fall all over themselves for one free drink ticket and a stupid hat. Mt gay is a terrible sponsor to work with, they demand the world and pay very little, if anything other than some swag.
