Black box from crashed Chinese airliner discovered

Searchers have recovered one of the two black boxes from the China Eastern Airlines flight that crashed on Monday killing everyone aboard.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said in a new briefing Wednesday the box had been severely damaged and it was unclear if it was the flight data recorder or the cockpit voice recorder, Reuters reported.

"We found a black box on the scene but this black box has been severely damaged on the outside, so the investigation team on the front-line is still ascertaining whether it is the flight data recorder or the cockpit voice recorder," said Mao Yanfeng, head of investigations at the CAAC.

In the Rostov-on-Don incident the plane impacted the runway in a near-vertical dive.  The data was still able to be downloaded from the recorders.  RIP.

That was a relatively new plane, so the voice and data recorders were probably ssd, which helps a lot.

Newer plane ... does anyone know, did it have the newer electrical horizontal stabilizer trim, or the regular pneumatic jack screw setup?

Straight down, all that leverage, seems too heavy to pull up that stabilizer if part of the control system failed. Is that brief recovery possibly an indication that they decreased power to help the recovery?

That would seem to be close to full throttle straight down.

Pre Covid, there were 400 or so Commercial passenger planes taking off every single minute of every day.  

My point is that commercial air flight is way safer than crossing the street to get to your mailbox.....

True - but when it does go south it is so horrifyingly catastrophic.

IIRC the last fatal airliner crash in the States was 2009.

I asked two technical questions because there are some former airline pilots here who would probably know the answer. There was clearly some kind of "discontinuity" in that dive, so I wondered if maybe they reduced power to try to reduce pressure on the stabilizer.

used to be one by one. Now it's more 2-3-4 at a time, and those don't make the news anymore either. 109 mass shootings already this year. More than 1 per day.
