Black box from crashed Chinese airliner discovered

Searchers have recovered one of the two black boxes from the China Eastern Airlines flight that crashed on Monday killing everyone aboard.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said in a new briefing Wednesday the box had been severely damaged and it was unclear if it was the flight data recorder or the cockpit voice recorder, Reuters reported.

"We found a black box on the scene but this black box has been severely damaged on the outside, so the investigation team on the front-line is still ascertaining whether it is the flight data recorder or the cockpit voice recorder," said Mao Yanfeng, head of investigations at the CAAC.

Wet coast.
Will this be a time in which the "black box" did not survive the crash?
In the Rostov-on-Don incident the plane impacted the runway in a near-vertical dive.  The data was still able to be downloaded from the recorders.  RIP.

That was a relatively new plane, so the voice and data recorders were probably ssd, which helps a lot.

Newer plane ... does anyone know, did it have the newer electrical horizontal stabilizer trim, or the regular pneumatic jack screw setup?

Straight down, all that leverage, seems too heavy to pull up that stabilizer if part of the control system failed. Is that brief recovery possibly an indication that they decreased power to help the recovery?

Great, Mikey is bloviating about flying planes now too.

Is there anything that he doesn't know?  Well, clearly there's a lot of things he doesn't know, and how modern planes work is one of them.  But not knowing anything about the subject never stopped Mikey in the past, so why start now.

I asked two questions. Perhaps practice the "reading thing", huh Lurch? Then you can work on the "writing thing."

No asswipe, you made 2 statements that display a complete lack of knowledge and then asked 2 questions based on that.

See the difference, or are you the one with the comprehension problem?

Story in the paper today said it came down @ 30,000 Ft/Min.

That would seem to be close to full throttle straight down.

Any aviators here who can clarify that?

Why don't you have him on ignore?

He only adds negative value - at great length.

For people that are afraid of the dangers of flying commercial...

Pre Covid, there were 400 or so Commercial passenger planes taking off every single minute of every day.

My point is that commercial air flight is way safer than crossing the street to get to your mailbox.....

True - but when it does go south it is so horrifyingly catastrophic.

IIRC the last fatal airliner crash in the States was 2009.

I asked two technical questions because there are some former airline pilots here who would probably know the answer. There was clearly some kind of "discontinuity" in that dive, so I wondered if maybe they reduced power to try to reduce pressure on the stabilizer.

I don't know why you have a hard-on for me, and follow me around these threads, but given that you do what you do, your nickname is appropriate ...

Not really.

We just notice it more when a big lump of humanity goes in one fell swoop.

Consider the, I think, 19000 murders in the USA in a year that happen one by one or so.

Or the carnage in Ukraine.

Planeloads of people get the best headlines :(

used to be one by one. Now it's more 2-3-4 at a time, and those don't make the news anymore either. 109 mass shootings already this year. More than 1 per day.

Asking the big questions here...

What were you doing at the neighbours house if the Letterbox is across the road?
