My buddy is looking for a mast

He just launched a 45' cruising cat, but doesn't have a rig or the budget to buy a new one.
The dream would be a 3-wire rotating aluminum rig off a cruising cat, but other options would be welcome. He has a 54' aluminum rig from a monohull, but it's very thin walled and this boat will likely go far and wide, so a decent rig is the goal.
Any ideas?
Oh yeah, the boat is in BC, so a West coast rig would be best.

Russ, I'm sure you know that there is that place in Lynden that has dozens of, if not more, masts from salvaged boats.

It seems like every older, big, boat yard I've ever been in has a few zombie masts hanging off fences or what ever that look like they haven't been touched in years.

Who's the designer of that boat. Looks very cool. Cool proa tender too. The skeeter is yours I think. Did you skeeter across the strait to the launching?

Ur right. Outrigger? Still nice tho.

Ran across this perusing Seattle CL later this morning. Thats the place. Tons of other deck hardware too.

I may have just the thing your friend is looking for. It is a 52 foot rotating mast off of my now departed racing catamaran. As a bonus, I have a mainsail that goes with the mast.

Back around 2000 some guy paid Randy Smyth to design a "turbo" Macgregor 36. They built the mast, bought a Randy Smyth main, and never finished the project. Several years later, I bought the mast and sail and used it until my boat was demolished when a tree fell on it. (The mast was stored elsewhere).

Here are the particulars. The section is a Francespar F590C section. You can find the technical details on page 39 of: http://www.sparcraft.com/uk/technic..._ranges/fichiers/catalogue_sparcraft_2005.pdf
It is 30 cm long and 14.5 cm wide. The moments are xx: 590 and yy: 2300. The walls are 3.5 mm thick. The mast weighs about 250 lbs, and seems very sturdy (and stiff) to me, but I am not about to tell anyone the mast is appropriate for them.

It comes already built, with masthead fitting, and base, spreaders and diamonds. two winches and four clutches. Messenger lines for main, jib, screecher, and spinnaker. Everything is in good shape. I can throw in a mast step if needed.

I have attached a couple of drawings of how the mast is set up. I just measured and the gooseneck is about 45 inches above the ball of the maststep. Looking at the photos of your very pretty cat (love that shearline), you might have to mount the mast on a short pedestal to clear the cabin roof.

One little problem, the mast is near Annapolis on the Chesapeake Bay. But here is a photo of how I drove it 1,000 miles from Florida to Maryland when I bought it.

Let me know if you are interested. It is a gmail address of "larry" and "forgy" (with no space between) That should fool the bots.

Wow! That sounds like quite a rig. It does seem a bit light for the cruising cat, but we'll have to compare it to other rigs. My proa has a mast from Francespar. Same section, but 100 x 200 mm section. Thanks for posting all the info.

My friend who built the boat doesn't blog, youtube, facebook, etc. I wish I could tell you more, but better if he joins SA and tells you himself.

Hey Larry, Russell, Everybody:

Josh here aboard Strider (44' catamaran requiring a rig) motoring up Lewis Channel in BC. Just managed to join SA.

That mast looks pretty sweet. Especially rigged for the highway. I wonder if its enough mast for what ive got going on here. I emailed a guy that would be able to weigh in on this but he's half way to Alaska sans starlink.

Welcome to SA. More photos of your boat please? And the usual stats such as displacement?

Looks cool!

Yeah the usual stats, not too sure. I imagine it'll be around 16000 pounds once rigged and loaded for travel. It's 44'×22'. Pretty skinny in the ends, probably too skinny. As of September 21st i'll have been working on Strider 12 years...there's a usual stat. ~$24k usd of West System epoxy has been applied to it so far.

Larry, your mast looks wicked, it's pretty much my dream mast, but too light according to my expert consultant. Which kinda makes sense considering how much bigger my boat is than the MacGregor 36. I need something strong enough to not worry about.

In the above photo (photos, woops) you can see the shop where the boat was made. The photo was taken today.

Strider,
I thought my mast was a little light for you, but I thought I would let you decide for yourself. Still, I wondered if a different sort of mast support might help, such as intermediate and upper shrouds instead of diamonds, but I am not a mast designer.

Your cat is really beautiful. The sweeping sheer and the spoon bows are a bit old school, but very eloquent. I hope you find the rig you need.

This boat doesn't come with a lot of facts and figures, but knowing my buddy as I do (met him mid-Pacific on his first circumnavigation), I think the boat could go far.

If you see a mast in the weeds that has promise, please get in touch. If he can't find anything, he's going to ask me to help him build a wood wing mast and I don't need another project.
