I am starting this thread for my newest design, a 42.27' LOD Ketch (or yawl, your choice) for a client in New Zealand. He wants a long range cruiser that is "different". I am working once again with "Rasper" aka Jody Culbert III for the 3d modelling. Jody knocks it out of the park and has the ability to know what I want sometimes before I even know what I want.

Do you have to worry about the height of the boom if the steering position is comfortably in front of it? Not much going to happen under the boom, except maybe for some swimming. Ah, you're worried about the stumpy projection of the boom forward of the mast - that would be good de-brainer.

Does he not get any topsails to play with?

Is access to the play pen forward (and it would be great for small children) just by the side deck?

Is the bowsprit an idea that comes and goes? Not present on all renderings.

Yes, my prime concern this morning was how to avoid smacking the helmsman in the head with the mizz boom. So I raised it 10" and now it will clear heads.

No topsails as of yet. Stay tuned.

Yes, access is by side deck or forward trunk hatch. There is only so much you can do in less than 43'. No small children at this stage.

In fact, the bowsprit does "come and go". It will be retractable in the old BCC style. Details still need to be worked out.

There's a lovely and unreliable story about Hilaire Belloc (an accident prone yachtsman) coming up to the end of the dock in Ostend out of control in his Pilot Cutter and a quick crewmember getting the pin out of the bowsprit at the bitts and surging the boat on the sprit, using it as a shock absorber.

I must say, that mizzen looks like it is doing some work. That's good.

If you look at my drawing you will see the rudder stock comes up in the cockpit ahead f the mizzen. The client is hot for a tiller. Me too. I think a boat as beautifully balanced as I can produce (cough cough) deserves a tiller. I'd like to say "I'm kidding" but I'm not kidding. This boat will have a beautiful helm.

This owner is obviously a much better sailor than myself...so much going on!!

That said I have a close friend who has a gaff rig boats and I'm amazed at the power of the rig without having a tall rig. I suspect pointing isn't the best but you can't have everything.

When it comes to engine choice you may want to consult the latest issue of Yachting Monthly and the issues with single rail diesels. Great idea until you get some crappy fuel. But that's a ways ahead.

It'll be fun to watch this project develop.

Would a gnav work on the mizzen to reduce sheet load, which might allow you to shorten the stern sheeting dick?

I do not have a good idea of how high the floor of the cockpit is, but with a tiller you might sit more forward making in hard to see around the pilot house (assuming that you can see over it sitting down, assumptions being susptect as always). Adding a tiller extension would help some, but since the coamings are flush to the pilot house it may hard to get outboard much and the coamings look a little thin for the bony ass crowd. One option I have seen on smaller boats is to put big ports in the aft end of the house and look forward through the front windows, which means you have to keep it all clean. I know you have already thought all this through already so I will get the couch of ignorance out of storage.

This leads to kind of a cool question, has rendering made it to the point you could create site lines and views from the cockpit? Kind of virtual reality point of view thing.

Cool boat there is a bit of common thinking with what were the Atoll from Dufour (apart that the Dufour final design wasn't properly thought out!).

My guess is that It will probably be faster than what people expect when seeing it from far away, especially on a reach which you often get offshore.

Perhaps the client has seen a graph like this one by Manfred Curry:



If you can decipher the markings, the big lobe up and to the left shows a gaff sail generating a huge amount more power with started sheets than a marconi sail.
