New Beneteau First 36

Read the most recent boat of the year article on it. Seems like a kick ass little rig. The description of the boat popping up on plane in a puff with the asym got the hairs on my arm raised. Raced a First 36.7 this past weekend. It was kind of a pig despite its "hinting at fast" rating. Perhaps it was the dirty bottom. This 36 looks like a huge upgrade to that size class and I'd love to sail one of the newer Beneteau's.
we called it a beachball ;-)

Yeah I wasn't super impressed...
The 36.7 was a great boat. Sailed one for 11 years. The price was low enough that we would see regional one design events get in to the mid twenties for entrants. 2007 NA's in Buffalo had 47 boats. Still was fun under phrf after the numbers started dropping. It's agreeably not as fun as a new 36, but at $400k you are never going to see one design events. Of course that's not what its designed for. But truthfully I'd rather have a used J111 and save the $150k for maintenance and future sail inventories.

The one I was on I think was just set up funky... I've heard good things about them from others and they have a good one design class. Hard getting walked by J105's left and right

If you are getting dog walked by 105's in a 36.7, the problem probably isn't the boat.
Hey I don't disagree, I've been trying to figure out what the issue was.

I'll attach a photo of the bottom when I get one.

Our mechanics weren't amazing, the crew is very green. But even when we improved greatly things weren't working. Good starts, etc etc... They just kept making trees upwind. Helmsman said he had very little helm and felt reasonably balanced.

I'm just trying to improve overall

Not only do we all have to work through that phase of why does it feel like I am dragging a bucket, the solutions are often many little things and a few big ones. Next come the days when all the forgoing is sorted and you are slow again!

You must be pleasantly surprised. Mind sharing what size kites / headsails etc? Does it weigh in at the promised 4.8 tons or has it put on a bit?
We weigh all boats before shipping out and even with water heater, webasto, 70kg of anchor chain and anchor, whatever gains that come through options (it pisses me off as we are always adding stuff, never taking them out) were compensated with improvements in hull and deck core layups with cnc milled core panels.
Our "trial" IRC certificate was 1.058 without any optimization and "wet halyard" IRC shenanigans...

If the rig of a Bene 36.7 is not tuned well (for each day even) it can feel like a pig. After a proper rig tune, the boat will come alive and feel like a new ride!

I've had good experiances on both the 40.7 and 36.7... They do require tuning and are sensitive to weight placement. They also both give good helm if setup correctly. Responsive but also great feedback.

Interesting Lars Reisberg of No Frills Sailing fame has changed his mind. He was well on with his plans to buy a First 36 but has now completely change direction to buy a new(ish) rendition of the Omega 42 originally produced 50 years ago. Is that a great hull shape that can be dragged into the 2020's? It would be good to get opinions on that. Back into the future!

I first thought he was buying and old one to refurb that.

Having a 'new' one is...an interesting choice, let's say.
