Just noticed that Mirabaud has DUAL WANDS(click on the picture) and notice the wand position as well:

Position noted. There is a significant gap between the position of the wand, which equates to the bow position on a conventional 18, and the main foil. Without having any real way of measuring it, it does look to be at least as much as on a Moth, if not more.

However, the dual wand is interesting. I cannot tell if they are linked. I wonder how it would work in waves.

It looks to me that the wands are angled outwards... my guess is that they've gone to that setup to get the wands away from the flow onto the centreboard and rudder - reduce the potential for ventilation. Not sure if this is directly translatable to moths - would be something interesting to try though.

My guess is due to the hull/infrastructure being wider. So when healed the wand is efficient for both tacks. Having a single wand, say on starboard, at that distance from the centreline would be good on one tack, but crap on the other when the boat is healed.

More detail on the new boats first race from boatdesign.net:

"Thomas (the engineer behind the project, who just posted answers to various questions) is probably too modest to say it, so I will: in its first race on a lake, namely the Bol d'Or du Lac de Neuchatel, in Switzerland, organised by the Cercle de la Voile de Grandson, the prototype foiler "Mirabaud LX" took 1st place in "monohulls", 17 minutes ahead of a (modified) 18-footer on a course lasting about 5 hours. The first "normal" monohull was a 42'' racer another 20mins behind.

Mirabaud LX was also only about 20mins behind the last multihull of the 32'' class Ventilo 32 (there's a very active and competitive fleet of these boats in French-speaking Swizerland).

This was in spite of very light airs which for the most part (1) prevented the "LX" from flying, and (2) made it a very tiring work for the crew to keep the boat on it's mini "hull".

So all in all, a pretty impressive achievement. And clearly if they have more wind in their next race, they might be able to (1) get further ahead of other monohulls, (2) possibly start mixing up w the fast multihulls.

The spoiler has a unibiaxial monotwin winglits that provide just drag in light air for just enough stability to take a picture. That way I know it happined!

So this pile of mechano bits that was supposed to be rewriting the 18 rules is now a sportsboat... If you havnt seen poor deluded DLs post in Sports boat anarchy, please check it out its a great laugh... those guys are even more brutal on DL than here, one guy even posted a full page of FUCK OFFS... funny stuff thanx DL :lol: As well as your new word for the dictionary people to add... DRAGGIEST... as they say "thats gold"

So is this thing going to race real 18s at the upcoming 18 Euro champs in France in 3 weeks, or is this guy to scared to sail in real life 18 conditions... wind over 20knt and waves, or is he just taking the sad old modified 18 so he has some sort of lame excuse at the end of the regatta... will be interesting to see, hope you guys get plenty of video and pics. In 3 weeks time this waste of time argument will be over... or will it

I made new wands for Glenn and I think weekend, Glenns is more extreme than mine. mine is about 5 inches angled out from my boat, Glenns is more!

in France, it won't be the Mirabaud LX, but a regular B18, modified to sail with the foil. It would be same rig, same foils, but different hull. The idea is really to compare the performance of a foiled 18' again regular 18'... for sure we will have video and pict

You mean his first foiling attempt. Will it have the super size wings or current rule wings. If you put super size wings on any 18 it will be faster than standard... doesnt really prove anything

And why isnt he bringing the tube machine, or is it only for no wind no wave lakes in swiss

Why doesnt he just sail it by himself or at least with 1 extra crew... in all the pics shown so far one guy has been sitting on his arse in the middle, surely thats got to be slow with the extra 80-90kgs... if its not an 18 why go for 3 crew when 2 can do it with no problem... or is the guy in the middle playing with the lap top computer needed to run this super complex high tech machine :lol:

on the 18', he could reduce the wing to fit in class rule.

I think that they have 18' wide wings because they are sometimes sailing with only 2 people onboard. And the reason is not coming to Six-Fours with the LX is really to show/see if there is a gain with a foiled 18' ... and probably also because the LX is not designed for sailing in wave, but for lake ...

There will be Howie, Woodie(Yandoo), Grant Rollerson (SLAM), Andy, Mason with there boats ... so yes, there will be some good teams and boats there. Perhaps not the top 5 of the last JJ, I'm agree, but enough to get an idea
