any idea when this gets released in New Zealand?
Got released on Netflix here in Oz today.

If you want to watch a story of a young girl sailing solo RTW in dungarees, bikini top and nice woollen jumpers with hair that looks like she just came out of a salon and incredibly unrealistic storm sailing scenes, including a 80ft wave breaking on top of the boat and sending it apparently 15feet underwater upside down then righting itself and popping out of the water bow first like a cork into relatively calm seas then go for it.

It was at that point where I couldn't contain my laughter any more about how bad it was that I turned it off.

I agree with Alaris, not a high budget film, but nice story. Really could have used more expert advising on the sailing scenes. Or they got cut out upon editing. The best part for sailing was during the ending credits were real footage from Jessica Watson’s voyage was shown.

nice testament to the builder that the rig stayed up and she surfaced with a nicely trimmed storm sail still intact. It was not a 360 roll but more like a 100 foot submarine dive and surface

Last time my boat was underwater the weather was just as bad as before when I came back up. I decided the money I paid for the submarine kit was a waste.

Agreed. I did decide to watch the last 10 minutes and yes the best footage was the real stuff.

The highlight, for me, was at one minute 30 seconds from the start she does her damnedest best imitation of the French Toast Girl.

I just watched True Spirit, the Jessica Watson movie, and I think they did an absolutely excellent job of depicting singlehanded sailing. They covered a number of key issues (that I had covered in my book):
1. The collision with a freighter, and the reasons behind it. What I refer to as the 3am effect.
2. That being becalmed is more stressful than being in a storm.
3. That loneliness is a massive factor in singlehanding. I wrote a whole chapter on The Mental Challenges. including crying.
4. What it's like being tossed around the boat by heavy weather, and the necessity to wear a harness.

I strongly suggest this for any singlehander.

Is it true that she did not do proper sea trials on the boat? Did she really do her first overnight 20 miles offshore sailing colliding with a tanker then 2 weeks later took off in a boat just out of the yard as they portrayed that in the movie? If so, that was quite irresponsible and should have given everyone involved a serious pause.

Obviously it was a race to be the youngest to circumnavigate rather accomplishing of just sailing around the world non stop. The film worked very hard to avoid this serious note. No doubt and not taking away anything - Watson was a very lucky young woman and fortunate that everything worked out for her.

The movie was a bit cheesy, but in all honesty, I enjoyed it. It wasn’t even close to the worst sailing movies.

All excellent points for singlehanders.

I don't single more than 50 miles because I don't enjoy my own company!

Likewise, I prefer racing doublehanded with a mate rather than fully crewed where personality dynamics inevitably play a larger role.

Any short or single crew's best companion is the (unfortunately hard-to-find) Watch Commander - don't leave home without it!

Movie was good for typical theatre-crowd dramatics, any action involving sailboats no matter how contrived is better than not!

Cheers!

She should have borrowed the ‘Womper’ from that nice young couple who won the America’s cup a few years back.

Jessica responded to that scene - and others in the movie -quite straightforwardly in an interview. The roll did happen and 6 other knockdowns as well. She was very clear that it actually lasted a much shorter time than shown in the movie - just seconds - but said that the duration in the movie was what it felt like at the time.

She also said that the frying pan incident was entirely made up, but she definitely should have kept the cabin "much tidier". And that she was never becalmed for a week as in the movie, just a day or two, but being becalmed was in fact very stressful.

Mostly she said that the actress seemed to catch her personality quite well.

All in all a very level headed woman. Before the start, I was impressed with her clear knowledge of all the systems on board she displayed in interviews.
