Jessica responded to that scene - and others in the movie -quite straightforwardly in an interview. The roll did happen and 6 other knockdowns as well. She was very clear that it actually lasted a much shorter time than shown in the movie - just seconds - but said that the duration in the movie was what it felt like at the time.

She also said that the frying pan incident was entirely made up, but she definitely should have kept the cabin "much tidier". And that she was never becalmed for a week as in the movie, just a day or two, but being becalmed was in fact very stressful.

Mostly she said that the actress seemed to catch her personality quite well.
Yes I know she had 7 knockdowns including a roll-over however how it was depicted in the movie just beggared belief.

I actually played a small part in her journey when she was approaching Albany. There was quite a thunderstorm on and offshore and she didn't answer any calls from her support crew and they were worried the boat had been struck by lightning and knocked out comms and for some reason they contacted me for some local knowledge if she needed to be rescued.

Turned out she was just asleep.

More unbelievable than when Robert Redford got rolled? :)

Watched it with the family last night. Must admit i felt sorry for the boom with the main sheet cranked on so hard that it couldn't move for much of the cockpit shots....and the sails flapping with the boat doing ~6 knots to windward.

The sailing scenes gave me the shits.

The boat sitting suspended upside down for long enough for me to snap off a turd, literally gave me the shits.

Still, i remember watching her finish on TV. It was a good flick to show our daughter.

If you want to watch a story of a young girl sailing solo RTW in dungarees, bikini top and nice woollen jumpers with hair that looks like she just came out of a salon and incredibly unrealistic storm sailing scenes, including a 80ft wave breaking on top of the boat and sending it apparently 15feet underwater upside down then righting itself and popping out of the water bow first like a cork into relatively calm seas then go for it.

It was at that point where I couldn't contain my laughter any more about how bad it was that I turned it off.
I must admit that I burst out laughing when the family received the distress beacon message saying that she was 15 feet under-water. Did she have one of those nuclear submarine ultra-low frequency communication devices??

But as to the dungarees, I've seen other comments on Sailor Girl's FB page about the movie's "unrealistic" portrayal of Jess wearing jeans, suggesting that any real sailor knows that you only wear full Mustos when offshore. But if you look at the real footage at the end of the film, where Jess gets off the boat, what was she wearing? Jeans.

Worth noting that Webb Chiles wears jeans on board, and he knows something about sailing oceans. I know very little, but crossed the Pacific last year wearing nothing. I can't imagine wearing jeans, I did not even have a pair with me. But then I did not get below 20S.

Doubt the movie did the real sailor justice.

No doubt and not taking away anything - Watson was a very lucky young woman and fortunate that everything worked out for her.
I would wager that even the best prepared enjoy a fair amount of luck when sailing on the ocean. Alex Thompson was one of the most prepared solo sailors and nearly lost his boat. Escoffier did lose his. No doubt she was lucky, but she put in her time. Compare her prep to Abby Sunderland and it was clear Jessica and her team did everything they could to ensure success.

It was entertaining. My wife enjoyed it. It drove me crazy every time you could see the wind instruments, she was in irons and the sails were never trimmed. Certainly, there are worse sailing movies.

What do we think of this likelihood these days with active radar reflectors and AIS?
AIS helps of course, but there is nothing in COLREGS about going to sleep and setting an alarm. You still bet your life the other guy is awake, has a radar and/or AIS, and is paying attention. Even if they have all that, giving way to sailboats is not 100% a thing among commercial ships.

This was roughly the view of the fishing boat captain that collided with Boris H just before the end of the last VG - "his AIS wasn't transmitting properly and he was asleep doing 20 knots, why are you blaming me?"

He is correct, if someone was sleeping doing 20 knots and hit me I would be suing their ass for a new paint job at the very least!
* when singlehanders were doing 6 knots, they were mostly a danger to themselves, not others.

A terrific (non-documentary) sailing movie has yet to be made. I think the problem is that getting all the details right is hard to do and appreciated only by the small number (actual sailors) who would actually realize that they are right.

I think that has to do with the challenges of filming on water in conditions that are actually exciting on a boat and look impressive to a camera...

How many times have you been out in conditions that feel epic only too look at photos and video after the fact and go "mehe"...

The sailing scene in the Thomas Crown affair remake is actually OK. Apart from the bit where Pierce Brosnan grinds an obviously empty winch drum.

The Urban myth I heard was that after the capsize the Driector said something along the lines of 'That was great, let's do that again!'
