A terrific (non-documentary) sailing movie has yet to be made. I think the problem is that getting all the details right is hard to do and appreciated only by the small number (actual sailors) who would actually realize that they are right.
Vast amounts of money spent on Tenet, and the 'Marine Consultant' who worked with the film crew was utterly clueless.

Any short or single crew's best companion is the (unfortunately hard-to-find) Watch Commander - don't leave home without it!
If you read the official report on the collision, you'll see that she was awake and looking around just minutes before they hit. One of the key problems was that she had the radar display set on North-up but the AIS display set at Heads-up, so it would have been very confusing to interpret what was being shown. This is one of the key reasons (the other was my own extensive experience) that I came up with the idea of "the 3am effect" which basically says that your mind just won't work in the middle of the night, so don't do anything that requires real thought.

And, as the movie clearly depicted, she suffered from dyslexia.

I’ll openly admit I was in the “doubter crowd” after that fiasco. I’ll eat crow and admit respect for what she did. I like to think I’m a pretty good sailor, but a lap around the marble beats me every time.

Yes I know she had 7 knockdowns including a roll-over however how it was depicted in the movie just beggared belief.
Just curious...how many times have you been rolled 360° at sea?

I've never gone past masthead under water in a blow, maybe 100°, just once and that once seemed like a lifetime.

(Now on a J-24, that's another matter, but they just tend to stay upside down.)

1988 anchored caletta sylvia way out west, north side of the straights of magellan looking for a window to duck round into canal sarmiento to head north and we got walloped by a katabatic that pushed the boat over till the lower spreader was underwater (it came up covered in kelp) cleared everything off the gimballed stove and just biffed us all outa bed, after spending 28 days crossing from NZ this was the nastiest spot of weather all trip. Onboard we also had 2 chileno navy guys who were out searching for a downed helicopter crew, they were in an open navy cutter with a pop pop engine so we let them stay onboard, dinner bunk etc for the night (paid huge dividends later on as the armada de chile can look after you pretty damn good if they want to) these 2 were in the cockpit immediately after the knock down pulling on their immersion suits and looking really worried so......... we fed them a cup of tea laced with drambuie
anyways that is the only full "knock down" I've had........ and it was at anchor !!!

Plenty of times in the Laser 30+ years ago sailing out of Freo SC!! But in a keeled yacht? Yeah thankfully nowhere near a knockdown, although the skipper of the Flying Tiger I crewed on over 10 years ago certainly tried!!

Saw the movie last night at a sold out fund-raiser showing at Sandringham Yacht Club with Jessica Watson and her inspiration, fellow circumnavigator Jessie Martin, in attendance. Typical distorted Hollywood depictions of sailing, cheerfully admitted to by Jess herself, but through it all it was a wonderful and quite emotional story. Funny Q & A session after the movie, ably led by AS President Alistair Murray.

So sad that Jess's beloved Cam is no longer with us but great that so many contributed to the Stroke Foundation and its ongoing research into that deadly, silent killer.

All excellent points for singlehanders.

I don't single more than 50 miles because I don't enjoy my own company!

Likewise, I prefer racing doublehanded with a mate rather than fully crewed where personality dynamics inevitably play a larger role.

Movie was good for typical theatre-crowd dramatics, any action involving sailboats no matter how contrived is better than not!

Cheers!

SPORTSCAR, I watched it last night also, but at home. Generally I thought it was as good as you will get - a couple of cheesy bits, but so what.

But the bit that really puzzled me was creating this fictional character as JW's mentor - did Bruce Arms refuse permission to use his name or something? Or was it just to create a storyline? Any insights?

Following is answer to above question by JW when interviewed.
”No. Ben Bryant is a fictional character that was created to represent a number of the different men who helped make Jessica Watson's journey possible. In a January 2023 Instagram post, Jessica wrote, "The fictional character Ben is one of my favourite things about the movie. Ben represents a whole team of people. While there are many who so deserve their own character @cliffcurtis_ has beautifully captured the spirit of these men who were so determined to see a young girl take on the world and the way they are some of my best mates. Forever grateful to everyone who played a part in making the voyage possible!"

My wife and I watched the movie also. First few scenes were definitely written for the sub teen crowd. Hokey- yes. But we really grew into the story. And the movie crew actually did a credible job interpreting singlehanded sailing - particularly for the sub teen crowd. first impressions can last a life time. Nothing wrong with presenting a Jessica’s story from a 16 year old point of view.

I remember the real life drama and tension of that time. Just as now, there were indeed non stop second guessing by hordes of self appointed pundits who thought they alone should define “responsible” behavior. I think all in all the film does great credit to a 16 year old kid who accomplished something larger than life, and refused to be stopped by the large crowd of naysayers and condescending dullards. Jessica inspired the world with her achievement and Iam betting, influenced untold many young girls to go out and break the mold. Well worth the time to watch her story play out - particularly if you have a young daughter whom you would like to encourage to go do great things.

Just on dawn end of watch. I was at the helm and the only one on the boat awake.

Navigator came up yawning and pointed "WtF!" Large container ship doing 20 knots passing astern about 1000m away. Didn't know it was there.

Got released on Netflix here in Oz today.

If you want to watch a story of a young girl sailing solo RTW in dungarees, bikini top and nice woollen jumpers with hair that looks like she just came out of a salon and incredibly unrealistic storm sailing scenes, including a 80ft wave breaking on top of the boat and sending it apparently 15feet underwater upside down then righting itself and popping out of the water bow first like a cork into relatively calm seas then go for it.

It was at that point where I couldn't contain my laughter any more about how bad it was that I turned it off.

Ok, that review sealed it for me. Not going to bother.

You failed to keep a proper watch. You let your shipmates down.
