Who hears of NEW YC's popping up these days? Charleston has one. The Daniel Island Yacht Club. Complete with new and very nicely appointed full service Clubhouse, dock, moorings, a launch to get you to/from the mooring, a SWEET 35-40ish foot Sabre Trawler for RC work and general, "spectating" platform for members, Club Director, Sailing Director, a fleet of 420's and Open Bic's. Looks like their first event is going to be the Shields Nationals the week before Charleston Race Week. Apparently, someone decided they needed a YC and got it going from the ground up with private funds. Pretty cool.

Thast a wide brushe you paintteng with Bubba..... you gotta prolbem withe Chucktowne or peopel you mette theire, spitte it oute. An dointe thick you no 'the southe' because of youre viewe oute of that narrowe windowe.
I lived there for three years and still have some of my closest friends there - in fact we will be there in two weeks to spend some time on the Bohicket. It was the most modern city I've spent any time in where educated and successful people regularly use the N word in public. The backwardsness and the bugs are the reason we left. It ain't like its a secret.

Bugs? What bugs? Standing on the banks of the Nuese river in shorts only packing up the boat on a sweaty steamy afternoon and all of a sudden, at once, a million bites from no-see-ums? Dem bugs??

We got some no-see-um spray from the old guy at ChYC, Emmet. They didn't bug us too much after that, and everywhere has mosquitos, even here in the New England mountains. Not even the 'palmetto bugs', which is what rednecks call cockroaches, were that big a deal. But when the fire ants sent Mer to the ER in anaphylactic shock while I was in the middle of livestreaming the Great Texas 300, the die was cast.

Emmett was one of my dad's best friends and he our boat while I proposed to my wife. So, he healed you of the Charleston "wave". Not sure on the women thing. Think it won't be a problem. Apparently, the club was started, funded by a wealthy family from up north, (Damn Yankees). Of the 5 clubs in the Harbor only 1 openly discriminates against women. The other does it privately. The rest are "with the times" as it were. Doesn't make the situation any less un-cool though....

You know I love the place Robbie, it is truly special. A lot of the inhabitants though...

Emmet was a class act. Always had time to help anyone, and insult you at the same time.

Do you know the name of the YC founders?

How many Charlestonians does it take to change a light bulb? Six, one to change the bulb and five to talk about how wonderful the old one was.
Most of the times I hear the N Word it is someone from up north trying to show their southern side. When I hear it I object to the term and point out the correct pronunciation. I lost a front tooth sixty years ago correcting three red necks. I might have been ahead of the times.

I hessitatte to believe thisse...............

Easily possible IMHO. I haven't heard anybody use the 'N' word in years but then I don't hang out with peckerwoods much. I grew up in the rural South (not near Charleston) and way back when it was every day use although not so much in my family. It's been in decline for a long time but there was a brief resurgence, in certain circles, after Obama was elected.
