My only experience of dinner at a yacht club in Charleston was when the Commodore after dinner announced that
"Gentlemen and their guests may smoke"
When Eye objected that not all the women competitors were guests, the Commodore corrected himself
"Gentlemen and their guests may smoke, and if there are any loose women, they may also smoke."

Fortunately the food was very good. I dont usually like cigars but I was sufficiently provoked and accepted one. I remember recalling that the taste is better then the smell on my husbands jacket when he comes home from dinner with his man cave friends.

FFS nobody cares who you heard say neocon.

How did they raise the money for a new club? Did someone leave the land in their will? Did they get a break on their taxes? Were they a paper club first?

You know I love the place Robbie, it is truly special. A lot of the inhabitants though...

Emmet was a class act. Always had time to help anyone, and insult you at the same time.

Do you know the name of the YC founders?
I don't. It's a married couple. I'm doing a small amount of IT business with them and got a full tour, (from the kitchen down to the dock) from the YC Director. While it is small and lacks green space I was really impressed. For the space they have I think they are doing it right. They have a handle on what they are and what they're not. If I lived over there I'd join.

Sounds very pleasant and it is refreshing to see someone successful giving their time and resources back to the sport ,

(instead of buying yet another superyacht that @Editor can fawn over on the FP. )

The individual behind the Daniel Island YC is a super passionate sailor and gentleman within the sport. He’s approaching it the right way and we are itching to get the boat on the trailer and bring it to his club.
I am struck by the quotation that the individual and his partner have chosen to post on the home page of the new yacht club's website. It says a lot about them and expresses a sentiment that I admire:

To desire nothing beyond what you have is surely happiness. Aboard a boat, it is frequently possible to achieve just that.

He lickes to caulle it 'bigge pimpeng', wiche seemes accurratte.
I suppose that if anyone is under the impression that Snaggle is trying to choose between Royal Huisman and Feadship for his next superyacht then @Editor might as well take their money as anyone else.

For my part, no amount of pimping is going to make me switch from Perini Navi.

I thicke theere is sum confussion over witch N word?

North is not used in politte convertssation in Chucktown,
Only when referring to the late, lamented "war of northern aggression."

(Full disclosure: I was born in, and my family is from ... Mississippi.)

I hessitatte to believe thisse...............
Call people out when they drop the “word” around me. A couple of guys at the beer store were throwing it around when a black guy walked in without them seeing. I said “would you say that if there was a black person in here and they said hell yes!” Then the big guy stepped into view. Two guys looked like they were going to die a painful death at the hands of an N word. They slunked out of the store and me and the guy had a little conversation about how backwards and weak they were. I don’t let people shit talk the Jewish population around here either.

As someone currently living in Charleston, having moved down here from the North. The amount of people who casually use the N-word is ridiculous. DIYC seems to be moving in the right direction, though hopefully, they allow women members.

I lived there for three years and still have some of my closest friends there - in fact we will be there in two weeks to spend some time on the Bohicket. It was the most modern city I've spent any time in where educated and successful people regularly use the N word in public. The backwardsness and the bugs are the reason we left. It ain't like its a secret.
Enjoy your visit! My sister and her family live on Adams Creek in Rockville

Still too big and slow for me. I'm more of a Southern Wind kind of guy now Alloy Yachts has departed. But SW advertise in Seahorse so must be ok.
Back on topic - this is sooo cool. And well done to the people in the know respecting their privacy.

Excuse my ignorance, but how does one person start a yacht club? Isn’t that just a marina if it’s owned by a singular person? Or does Mr Money Bucks plan on giving it away to the future membership? Not trying to be rude, just not really familiar with how a yacht club is formed.

The YC is part of a master-planned community created from scratch on a formerly contaminated site. Several thousand housing units, a sports arena, a downtown, and more were planned and have largely been put in the ground. The first phases went in around 2007 I think, which is when the Community Association (like an HOA but bigger and more powerful) incorporated the DIYC and allocated a vacant space for it. The "DIYC LLC" remained a non-operating shell for the past 15 years until they found someone willing to finance and operate it, and they appear to have done so. The difference between a YC and a marina is that a YC is a private membership club, which means it operates under different rules than a normal commercial business open to the public.

If anyone knows where the City of Charleston planning commission minutes can be found discussing the YC, or if you want to disclose to me the identify of the YC founders, please lemme know. I'll pull the LLC records over the next few days when I have time.
