This thread reminded me of when I was in college in the 80’s at Old Dominion University. The Bidawee public golf in Chesapeake, VA finally allowed black people to use the course they had paid taxes on for decades. I took a ride over to see the protesters outside of the fence line. They were beside themselves that something so terrible could desecrate “their” public course. I wish I had a video of that show of ignorance and open racism. I hope it’s a forgotten thing of the past, like Jim Crow laws they had then. I couldn’t buy beer on Sunday and the stores were all
closed. That’s because back in the day, black people worked 6 days a week and after Church on Sunday couldn’t go shopping for what they needed. Nice way to screw them a little harder back before my time.

Y'know, I never thought of that aspect of it, but you're probably right. There were a lot more mom'n'pop stores in black neighborhoods that got busted by ABC than anywhere else.

Why all the hate of the South? I was born in South Carolina and grew up here. I hate the fact that we Southerners get stereotyped. I think once you took the time to get to know us we are not as racists as you think. So why don't you come down from your Holier-than-thou high horse and stop judging people? FYI-Two of my best friends are from a different culture. One is Black the other Filipino. Another FYI--If you want to hear the "N" word go listen to Rap Music.

So you're saying you have a black friend? Definitely not a racist! How do you feel about unmarried women joining the yacht club?

People love the south. Just not the racists who live there.

One of my neighbors, a retired teacher who grew up in rural North Carolina and lived/worked in New York for most of his life... and is black... said there are big differences between racism in the North and racism in the South.

We've had several long conversations on the topic, only after I've known him for years and both socialized and worked on volunteer projects together. His summation: "In the North, white people don't care how rich or successful black people are, as long as they don't move into their neighborhood. In the South, white people don't care how close black people are, they can even be room-mates in a mobile home; as long as there is never any hint that the black people are richer or more successful."

Interesting. I had never heard that before.

I suppose I need to watch my step responding to a Moderator. Yikes!!! However, let the chips fall where they may:

Actually I have known my "Black" friend since 1978. Yeah I am old. We first met at Kroger Save On. He worked in the Drug Department and I worked In the Grocery Department. The Departments did not get along but we did. It's funny we argued about everything. He ended up being my Romance Counselor and helped me pass my Fortran College Computer Course. Thanks to him I met my wife of 32 years and obtained my College Degree. My friend now lives out west. He still comes to South Carolina once a year and yeah we still argue about everything. Did I mention he was my Best Man at my wedding. Located n a small country church just outside of Anderson, SC? We call the location the sticks? Do you know what that means?

Unmarried Women and Yacht Clubs? Since I am not Rich enough to be a member of a Yacht Club I cannot answer your question However, the Sailing Club I am a member of accepts everyone. Women, Men, Black, White, Asian, Indian, etc...

Thank you Mr. Moderator for a trip down memory lane. I appreciate it.

Hmmm, my 2 best friends growing up and sailing with were Jewish, my best friend in high school was black and I lived in the black neighborhood in Norfolk, VA, where life was wonderful. The best roommate I ever had was a guy in college in VA named Kirlunge from Haiti who needed a room.

Thank you for proving my point mauipunter. Typical stereotyping of people from the South from a Hoiler Than Thou person.
I think you missed my point. We do love the south, but not the racists. Do you love the racists there? Most non-racists don't like the racist ones. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe you have lots of racist friends that you love. I have no idea. But, no, we don't like the racists there. Period. Being intolerant of racism isn't any kind of "holier than thou" position, it's one of decency. Again, perhaps you are more tolerant of racism than I am because you aren't "holier than thou". No idea.

Other that visiting with our daughters and their friends in Charleston, our limited interactions with people may be why, but we see very little racism in our interactions with the people there. But there are a lot more northern transplants there than in much of the rest of the south.
