You can definitely hack it. But jumping straight into offshore is a bad idea. If the weather is good you'll have a good time. If the weather is bad you'll hate it. It's also a bit of a risk taking a newbie offshore.
The best way to get into sailing is to take a couple of classes, then find a spot on a boat for Wednesday night sailing. You can normally just show up before racing and ask if anyone needs rail meat. Someone will take you out.
