WHO DEY. We've only gotten better in the off season.

This time we're taking it home.

--

We added about 1,000 pounds of quality lineman through free agency, drafted a good safety and CB, kept the core offense and defense together, and Burrow was clocked at 20.8 MPH at the OTAs without a brace on his knee.

Of course, we've got a tougher schedule including playing a serious grudge-carrying KC, Tampa Bay, the grudge-carrying #1 AFC seed from last year (Tennessee), Brady & Tampa Bay, the Patriots, and the fucking Jets (trap game...look what happened last year). And we are still in the the AFC North, so we get the Ravens, Browns, and Steelers twice. Though I think the Steelers may be up for an ugly year, even if Trubisky is an upgrade from one-seaon-too-much Roethlingsberger.

And we have five primetime games, which of course means a lot less to me now that I'm not on the far side of the world anymore getting up at 4AM to watch 1PM football, but it's still nice.

"Our standards have never changed. I'm not going to accept losing."

Also, can we talk about Baker Mayfield getting traded to the Panthers for a two cans of Monster Energy and an opened bag of chips?

The most amusing part of this trade, to me*, is that the Browns will be paying Baker Mayfield $588,000 to play against them in Week 1.

* Beyond proving that I was 100% right in the razzing I gave the Editor over his "New favorite team" when Mayfield was drafted, that is.

To be fair to Watson, I do not believe he was particularly discerning WRT race with the women he allegedly harassed, groped, and exposed himself to.

Before all of this came to light I made a comment in jest from Blazing Saddles and a regular poster from Clemson took offense, fwiw all the ones whose photos I saw were the lighter shades of pale. When he first went pro he bought a house for his mom, did all the good will things expected. What he has done since then is despicable - and if he wasn't a very talented and well to do football player he would be doing hard time. It's good to be wealthy.

Dammit. He even showed up early - before the veterans were required - to start camp with the rookies. Kid's got an amazing work ethic.

Shouldn't affect the regular season, but 2-4 week recovery time is normal. Not sure if that means "full" recovery or not.

Not sure how "normal" works for 25 year old elite athletes, probably shorter unless then plan is to have 300 pound guys throwing them to the ground on a regular basis immediately after recovery.

He missed most of training and the preseason last year, and that worked out OK. But a nice, full season from training camp would be good. Last year he came out and played one series of downs in the last pre-season game.

First regular season game is Sept 11th, home against the Squealers. But pre-season starts on August 12th.

I have been most pleased to know the Bears are likely to prove to be a better team than many experts predict. It's been a while since Bears fans have been able to say the team exceeded expectations. Now, it's looking like we will.

Oh, I forgot to add, the Bears are predicted to be the worst team in the league...

DeShaun Watson...six game suspension without pay.

Without pay is the big stinger, eh? It's going to cost the poor guy about $345,000.

Because he's paid basically a $1,035,000 salary with a $45 Million guaranteed signing bonus for his first year. The Browns and Watson and his agent knew a suspension was a possibility, so they structured his contract accordingly. So he loses 6/17 of his 2022 salary.

Apparently, Watson is also now only allowed to get massages that have been arranged by the Browns. Which, along with having to live and work with Cleveland, may be the worst punishment of all for him.

--

For the conspiracy theorists in the room, the NFL actually argued in the hearing for an indefinite suspension of at least a year with a $5 Million fine. But under new rules, the decision was arbitrated by in independent jurist - a former federal judge - agreed on by both the NFL and the NFLPA.

So...was "throwing the book at him" just window dressing to make the NFL look like it cares about women, while knowing they'd never get anything close to it? Or are we to believe that if Goodell still had the authority he'd have suspended him for a year or more?

Because the league CAN appeal it and try to get it extended or over ruled.
