A billion dollar industry officiated by part time employees. The only reason that makes sense is to control outcomes with plausible deniability.
Professional officials with performance stats would certainly change the games. But that will never happen

Historical note…

Back when Cincy was one of the early adopters of the no-huddle and using it regularly, defenses couldn’t adapt. So one team - I cant remember which - pioneered the “trick knee defense” where they began faking injuries to stop the no huddle and slow down the pace.

Full circle. Though Jessie Bates is far from the first and only one to do this this year.

There seems to be a bit of that around. We've seen some cheap shots and late hits in our games this year.

We've had a couple of meaningless, egregious hits in the closing moments of games we were winning, by teams playing at home who were not happy losing.

The Titans Jeffery Simmons got fined for low hitting our players during the victory formation kneeldown. Just vicious bullshit hits, I think Simmons is the only one who got tagged, but there were several flagrant attempts. Like crippling a guy during a kneel down formation is going to change one damned thing. It didn't get called, and they tried it a couple of times.

The erstwhile victim, Ted Karras, had an opinion on the behavior and the fans cheering it on.



The week before, George Pickens, the Steelers rookie wide receiver, did a deliberate head to head hit on Tyler Boyd on an on-side kick recovery. Pickens was ejected from the game, but the kick recovery was the last meaningful play with :44 left and no timeouts.

Of course, we expect this shit from the Steelers. As someone commented, "it wouldn't be a Bengals/Steelers game without a little street violence."

It’s definitely disappointing on a number of levels. The Dolphins coach came from the Niners so he should have had Tua prepared for that stuff to the point that it didn’t fluster him so much.

Bottom line is the team wasn’t prepared to win that game. I think Bosa could have played clean and the result would have been the same.

Twas a long time ago. Saw Seattle, under Chuck Knox, used it against the Raiders in the 80s. Didn't even try to hide it, was always the same two inside tackles who would took turns.

No excusing it, but the team learned of their best shot at the Superbowl (Jimmy GQ, or Jimmy Glass) breaking his foot at halftime. So, yeah, looks like they came out pretty pissed off and/or knowing that Miami might be who they play in said game. Now that the 9ers have a rookie QB (and Mr Irrelevant at that)- I doubt the SuperBowl is in the cards, but who knows what these overpaid, over pumped athletes think - given the emotional nature of the game.
