The NFL doesn’t care about the local fans. Imagine being able to sell the rights to the Progressive Auto Insurance NFC
Championship game And the AFC Championship game brought to you by Budweiser. The numbers are being run as we speak. If the league makes more money, each team makes more. The worst to the best make more money. The 1 team who doesn’t get 1 home gate is made up for by getting a piece of the pie every year.

Really. So what exactly do you think I have wrong? The money is huge in neutral site games. Far and away more than just holding it at the #1 seeds home field. The NFL can’t actually make money, so the profits have to go to the members in other words the team owners all get their share. A guaranteed 1/16 share of 1 billion dollars every year is better then maybe getting the ticket and parking dollars once every 10 years or so.

The NFL was a tax-exempt 501(c)6 non-profit until 2015 or so. Essentially they were a trade association for the 32 teams which were for-profit, but the league themselves were not-for-profit.
Many don't realize they voluntarily relinquished this status in 2015. On one hand, it exposed them to taxes. But it also let them close the books and get rid of public reporting requirements for things like the commissioner's salary and income and expense numbers.
The whole thing was generating distracting bad PR while politicians were exploring bills to change their status, and was considered a good move for the league and teams.
