A couple of intrepid mariners are rowing and sailing their way from Inuvik, Canada through Amundsen Gulf and under Banks and Victoria Islands. Cameron Webb (live in San Fran) and Matt McFayden (Sydney native, now also hails from SF) have travelled something like 1200 miles over 33 days in a Norseboat 17.5, an open-dinghy gaff rigged sloop with two rowing positions. (video)
The two are calling their adventure "Beyond the Circle," and are trying to aid two California non-profits working on ocean-related issues, "Save our Shores" and "Coastal Watershed Council".
If you remember, another Norseboat 17.5 was previously used by Royal Marines Tony Lancashire and Kevin Oliver in 2009 and 2010, traveling 1400 miles in 42 days the first year, reaching Gjoa Haven, and then another 400+ miles the second summer before being stopped by ice in Resolute Bay. They were trying to raise $ and awareness for "Toe in the Water," a program assisting injured veterans through sailing.
This year, the ice may not cooperate much longer, but the two appear to be making excellent progress thus far!
