Not a race boat?

Multithom says the Corsair 880 is not a race boat. I shall now publicly proclaim my prediction! The 880 will win this year's Race to Alaska. I'm willing to bet 3 Oreo cookies and a glass of cold almond milk. Mark my words!
Oh dear…

And now I have to start saving up for the likely loss of the cookies and milk... That's pretty shitty to sell a boat at that price point that is structurally unsound. Reminds me of a certain Multi 23 I used to own. At least it looks like I won't have to pay Captain Donald Lawson the pizza and beer I promised if he sets a significant record on Mighty Merloe. If the pictures are any indication he has managed to render her unusable.

Doesn't seem like tres has quit looking at the tracker currently. Gotta admire the plucky f242 single handing in among the leaders. Gotta wonder why mojo is slower than an f242.

Pestou has done well. Will be interesting to see how long he can keep it up.

Reminds me of another singlehander in a previous R2AK, who used to lose places at night whilst resting and avoiding logs and then regaining most of them by day….

I'm an fboat sailor.. but my money is on We Brake for Whales.

Mojo is doing well. The French seem to understand VMG..;P. They are sailing 2 knots faster (SOG) and over 1 knot better VMG than Run Duck.

So the 880 is literally falling apart in relatively benign conditions..? Imagine how Mr. Farrier would feel about that. If the first F-27s would have been such dumpster fires the multihull world as we know it wouldn't exist. Multithom, you were right, for all the wrong reasons. Though it looks like they are still moving forward..?

The French generally understand tides and current very well and what it does to VMG.

I am also a great believer in studying the tracks of boats to see how well they are performing. ”Whales” has the best looking track so far, and if they hadn’t gone the long way round (how often has it payed in R2AK to go around Saturna?) they would have been right up there and closer with the leaders a lot earlier.

If they are still in touch, the usually boisterous and turbulent conditions in Johnstone Strait could be in their favour…. Best faced with a lot of waterline length, sail power, inertia and tidal savvy….

Why do you prefer "Whales'" track over the leaders? Pestou is amazing but will have to rest at some point. The other 3 leading multis appear to be sailing very efficiently. The "Budgie" boat is also doing surprisingly well.

For me it's less about the current track.. They did very well in the light air proving ground and are up in the leading pack on day 1.

I think if conditions get tough they will start to extend out. Upwind in waves in a small trimaran is awful. A nice long heavy monohull will start pulling away.

On Sunday the wind swings and builds.. It looks like its going to be a few days upwind for the fleet.

@munt

It was just my impression. I am not looking for an argument and am not saying that Pestou, Mojo and Ruf Duck have bad tracks. Clearly not, because they didn’t go around Saturna for starters. Budgie Smuggler’s track is also pretty good, which is in part why they are doing so well. What happens in the next few hours for them will be interesting.

The closer (or more parallel) to the rhumb line, the more obtuse the angles are on the tracker for each tack/gybe or change direction, the better the track overall. Acute angles are a general indication of a poor or unfortunate tack/gybe or change in direction. But then, you already know that.

Assuming that I understand geometry is quite a stretch but I appreciate your good intentions. I think the 30ish foot trimarans should actually do quite well in upwind conditions. This is one of the things that makes this race so great, seeing how different designs and humans adapt to the wildly variable conditions.

Glad they've all gone the inside course, last year was a less enthralling than previous years.
