During the latter portion of my enlistment I was assigned aboard a destroyer as a radar tech. Since I had my entire paycheck deposited at home for the family any spending money I had was the result of………………..enterprise. When we hit port I would stand watches for guys desperate to go on liberty. Being married I was less compelled to go ashore than the liberty hounds. Made pretty good coin, enough that it set me up for my next endeavor……money lending. It seems the liberty hounds went through money pretty quickly so they not only needed a duty exchange….they also needed someone to lend them money. Enter the bank of me. $10 for $20, $20 for $35. So now I’m ready for the next elevation of my enterprise.

I buy a small bar refrigerator at the exchange in the PI. I find a spot in the back of the radar room near power and set it up. Then I buy a few flats of cokes and stash them under the deck plates. Put some in the frig and wait. Soon we’re out on the line and the ships store runs out. Now my store is open…………each coke being just a little more expensive than your average coke. I'm now killing it.

A little while later we have one of those hated surprise divisional space inspections by the XO and all his entourage. He see’s the refrigerator and asks what it is. When I tell him he says get rid of it………its “pandoras box”. I’m not happy as I have a lot of coin invested in my enterprise and I have not reached the break even point yet. So……I move its location but still in the radar room………I paint it grey (we had LOTS of grey paint)…….cut and drill a few holes in the door. In those holes I mount a few spare analog meters and dials…..and I’m back in business. It lasted through two more divisional inspections. It probably was there when the ship was decommissioned.

So…………….I find the glued on bolt heads completely believable. Completely……..

The thought of someone going "what do we do with that?" when boat is dry docked for major refit is pretty funny.

At least it isn’t one of the French subs we cancelled.
The govt doesn’t like to admit it, but the real reason they were cancelled is because the engineers couldn’t figure out a way to move the torpedo tubes from the stern to the front…
I thought it was the white flags permanently fitted to the periscopes...

Been there, done that, too expensive to pay dividends.
Economies change. During the second half his working life, my Uncle worked for Rio Tinto auditing retired and decommissioned mines working out what resource price would be the trigger for reopening each mine given expected yield and modernized technologies.

Didn't make a lot of money in those days in the service. I had cut hair since I was 12 years old, ordered a couple Oster Professional Hair Clippers and started giving haircuts. Six months after getting to NAS ADAK, I took over the Public Works Tool Room, I set up a chair in back where my men sharped and repaired tools. Pretty soon I had Chiefs and Officers lining up for haircuts, since I gave a better haircut then the Navy barbers. I usually said pay what you can afford and what the haircut is worth. Chiefs and officers usually left me $5 per haircut, enlisted would give me $2-3. Usually averaged giving about a 100-125 haircuts a month.
