Foilers? What foilers?! Oh, you mean the boats with the new "foil assist" foils that allow the boat to partially foil? Be interesting to see what some of you say they're doing when the actually do foil! (after the next rule change when they add rudder T-foils)

It will happen-just not yet........

Looks like Nic will be part of the prologue race. Foiler or nor, on Maitre Coc. ;)

(That end needs some cutting though. :) )

Or not, prologue race is a bust.

18 IMOCAs, 15 not able to race due to issues like damage, not being there, etc.

17 NY-Vendee entiries.

+ O Canada as the extra.

Conrad is still on the way. Maybe someone else too?

They have to arrive in NY North Cove Marina on their own, deadline is 1200 on the 26th.

Via an article there were 3 retirements from the race so far, reducing the starters to 14

- Ari Huusela – Flying with Finnair: Hard to race without a boat

- Stéphane Le Diraison – Marine Renewable Energies: a delayed boat launch does not allow him to be ready on time to start the race.

- Jean-François Pellet – Come in Vendée: measurement controls were not validated on time to allow him to take part in the race.

All three need the 2500+nm solo race on the book to qualify for the VG. Stéphane has slot 25, Jean-François wants on the waiting list. Ari is not registered.

According to an article in Le Telegramme the addition of a media crew member is up for discussion again, as not everyone is in agreement about it. A meeting between the organizers and the skippers one of the coming days in NYC should bring a decision.

If they are allowed, the following media crew were announced in Tip & Shaft #16:

Vincent Riou (PRB) - Martin Kéruzoré (producer of PRB web series)
Fabrice Amédéo (Newrest Matmut) - Fred Plisson (iTélé journalist)
Sébastien Josse (Edmond de Rothschild) - Yann Riou
Armel Le Cléac’h (Banque Populaire) - Kevin Escoffier (BP team member)
Jérémie Beyou - Maitre Coq team member
Jean-Pierre Dick - St Michel Virbac team member

The professionals disagree with you. All the wealthy teams who have had new boats built for this edition have built foilers. Not one new build without foils (ignoring nandor fa). They seen to agree that the boats are faster. If it's a question of reliability, with a decent number of foilers on the start line it would seem to be reasonable to think that at least one will make it round and do so quickly. BP8 seems to me the favourite at the moment
Of course they know fucktons more than me.

But since when has that stopped people from talking shit on the internet?
Very true

In another article mentions that Maître Coc hit a whale and damaged the starboard foil during the delivery.

They are figuring out if they can do a quick fix, or will have to replace the foil in France. Jérémie will race, if necessary with a shortened foil. They are also making a plug. - I guess that is one of the not so secret spares the foilers will carry furing the VG. ;)
Maitre Coq's foil has been repaired (currently in the final post cure) and will be delivered to North Cove in a few hours from Bristol, RI.

The reason being that not all those guys are really media guys. So of the 14 racing there will a couple solo, (obligatory for VG entry qualification) a couple with 'real' media guys and a couple with pseudo media guys who are actually navigators/training/skipper sparring partners. Screws up the solo race factor IMO, hence the fuss.

Nice! With the foil repaired we should have a bit more to speculate.^^

There will be no media crew on the NY-Vendee. Source.

The media crew discussion apparently turned pretty ugly with (final) outcome that only the 3 media crew with full press credentials are allowed, ie the ones for Fabrice Amadeo, Tanguy de Lamotte and Conrad Colman.

is there a metal structure in this foil? the leeway surface has a lovely shape.

Let's wait. There are a few hours left for yet another change. A bit more consistency would be nice.

I actually thought that it can't be too hard and that I saw something similar in the NY-Barcelona race. (Allowing 1 media in the perpetration for the BWR.) Must have been a dream...

Really ugly, but then again every VG year has some nasty little controversy. In this case, it was pretty cheeky to call Kevin Escoffier a media crew member, and it would take about 5 minutes for that to turn into a full-on arms race with the world's top performance/data analysts getting phone calls to 'come and sail as media crew'.

Was a great race in NYC, and really fun to finally get to sail with Alex again. I was on the pumps for the entire 1h45 race. Fitbit says I burned 990 calories with avg heart rate of 126. I think I left two gallons of sweat in the mouth of the hudson.

Pics, or it didn't happen.

on verdier imoca there is a structural reinforcement made by a piece of titane at the jonction of the tip and the shaft (the curve zone), on maitre coq (different foil designer) I don't know, have heard the foil is made of differents parts.

to follow the race day by day, is there an active map plan to be on line somewhere ? and in the US, is there any website or tv that will make the start live ?

thanks

There is a racetracker. Live once the race starts.

No idea if they do something specific for live coverage.

Foils

The Maitre Coq foil is different. While all other foils are L shaped theirs is more like an Y. They have added a vertical component to reduce leeway, it is also more angular. Render of the foil (source) and a picture in real life.
