Olson 30

A friend that is a good sailor (he has circumnavigated the world) but knows nothing about racing has recently bought a sweet Olson 30. I am going to sail with him and organize and train his crew this racing season. I have never sailed this make and would be greatful to anyone that could tell me what this boat likes and what makes it go fast. Also, does anyone have a polar diagram for this boat.

All help and comments appreciated.

The Olson 30 is a small big boat. it sails much faster than its size. I do not have a polar but try Kevin Miller at North Sails, Oxnard, CA. Kevin sailed with Rick, the owner of Perfect Balance, a National Champion. Tell him Joe from Deuces Wild suggested it. Going to weather, particularly in a sea, do not pinch. Keep your speed up. Off the wind keep your chute full and if the wind comes up, start movng crew aft to keep the rudder in the water. The bow wave will move to the front of the cockpit. I have surfed at 23 knots briefly. Of course, keep the weight off the boat.

I would suggest www.olson30.org might be a good start.

BTW, which boat is it? Please have the owner contact us so we can add him to the list.

The Olson 30 is a great boat and a lot of fun to sail. In some ways it is a strange animal as the keel is oversized for the sail area compared to more modern boats. The oversized keel makes the boat faster with the main slightly ragging before going to smaller sail in waves. You can just pull the travup in the lulls and you point higher/net with the overpowered feel. The advice above of not getting the genoa too tight is also very good. If the boat still has the single spreader rig 4" to 6" off the spreader depending on the waves. Itis real easy to over-sheet the genoa. The faster boats over the last 15 years have re-built the mast base because they soften and moved the butt forward to get more rake. They get bigger headsails with the longer luff and go mucho faster in light flat water. You can sail deeper than you think for a ULDB with the kite up. Best conditions are light air all directions up to 8 knots, downwind higher end. Worst condition mid range wavy stuff and mid range reaching. Breeze reaching with no kite not so good against your class since you are racing a lot of 35 to 40 foot boats.

I will echo that it sails faster than its size, and is great in light air. They pick up the puffs that the big boats can't, and when well sailed can out perform some of the sport boats in our area.

All good advice. We have found dropping down to the #2 sooner than you think is fast, of course we are light on crew a lot. Boat will really go with the #3 in breeze and sail deep with the kite, very good conditions for the Olson 30. Boat responds well to playing the backstay to depower as well as sheeting the main tight and dropping the traveler in puffs.

Where is the boat located? Cause the Nationals are at LBRW; NAs on Lake Ontario.
