i dont think the 49er was ever open. however, i think the tornado was. the finn is a moot point... Size/weight wise a mixed crew 470 would probably be best anyway, imo... which isnt that well founded but hey whatever..

Until 2004 or 08 it was open. Tina Baylis skippered for her husband Trevor for a number of years with some success.

Tasar should be for the mixed class. It was built for men and women to sail together it would only make sense.

At the last Hobie 16 Worlds, mixed crews finished in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th. Looks like in the right sort of cat, mixed crews work very well indeed.
Open is a joke and always has been - it's an insult to women.

49er. No earthly reason why you can't have a fast mixed crew in a 49er, it's not very physical at the back.

Choose your classes (except keel boats) as single or double handers. not one of each for the dinghys and screw the rest.
My preferance would be to make them all (except keel boats) single handers and have more boats / countries on the start line.

In an ideal world yeh, but I'd have M/F High Performance rather than mandate a Multihull, provided that was the only criteria used to choose the equipment. If a multihull justified it's place on those grounds then fine. If it turned out to be a Moth then good luck.

The IOC caps the number of competitors they will pay for. So, the tornado class is capped at 18? countries.... if you went with a single hander... that would double the number of countries who could send a representative. With more slots available... you would see more countries supporting a sailor to compete in the games. You would have to establish a qualification standard....the IOC wants no part of Eddie the Eagle.
I think you make an outstanding point Alive..
The USA model is now selecting for committed sailors first coupled with a record of accomplishment at collegiate and world levels. They feel that these sailors can hop into any class and quickly get into the game.. Training will bring them up to medal caliber. The notion that you need a strong domestic one design fleet to provide "Olympic talent" is sooo 20th century.
Hell,... the Chinese team beat the American team in China on T's this cycle... They got trained up in a few years.
Making a bunch of slots available will get lots of countries involved forging training alliances to support their athlete.

For Multies, the following comes to mind.
Mens - Marstrom 18 or Viper single handed. Marstrom 18 is like a Marstrom A Class but a little wider and a slightly bigger rig. Can be with or without kite.
Womens - Viper single handed.
As for Keel Boats, the Star is actually a good choice for the Games because it only requires 2 athletes, not soaking up too many participant slots allocated to sailing.
The addition of another event, 'Exhibition Event' would be interesting and you could rotate classes through it, such as the Foiling Moth, Long distance event or 18 Skiffs (with a 1/3 less boats on the starting line due to athlete quota.
