ORR rating

Hauled my boat yesterday. The Conolift said my boat weighs 18,300 lbs. The manufacturer lists weight @ 14900. Now I know that what manufacturers say is the weight rarely turns out to be the weight and I have a fair amount of shit still on board,  but 3400 lbs is a big difference. So let's be conservative and say I have 1500 lbs on board.  That makes 16,800  a long way from what my ORR rating used. The one I got g last year that made me throw in the towel for MAC entry how do I get the "correct weight" used.

If your ORR rating used "sister" ship numbers for a "partial measurement" then they always err on the faster side with your rating, i.e. they went with the mfg. (lower) weight for partial measurement".  

I'm thinking you may have to pay to get your boat measured to get that weight used.  If you plan to use the rating then its probably worth it.  

Not an expert just my thoughts from what I've learned.

I doubt very much that the "Conolift" is accurate.  When was the last time it was calibrated?  In the 27 years or so I've been surveying yachts, I have never seen an accurate lift of any type. 

Yacht measurers use calibrated scales with calibration certs. That is how you get the correct weight for your yacht.

 
A study I did back in the 70s of published weights vs weighed weights showed a fairly consistent:

Weighed Weight = Published *1.15 +100  , all in pounds

For your case that would make the 14, 900 about 17, 200 if I can still do math. Pretty close to your result.

In order for you to get an accurate rating in ORR a full measurement needs to be done.  Or better yet you could hire a good designer, Alan Andrews comes to mind who would look at your current set up /rating and make suggestions...

Between the cost of a full measurement and a rating review by a yacht designer you are looking at around 3k.  Then you will need to pony up more $$ to make the changes / modifications that the designer identifies.  

A cheaper option would be to order one or two ratings from US Sailing of competitive sister ships and look at the differences between them and you.  I have done a few of these and depending on the type of boat may be able to help you for a few hundred..

First Conolift is new, of course that does not mean it is calibrated.

Second 17200 plus, lets say, a 1000 lbs of stuff would imply that the conolift may be  correct. 

Third sounds as though Bayview is going to organize a weigh-in/measurement festival that will presumably spread the cost over many in spring, so I guess I will wait.

Lift weights are always high as the straps are not at straight down due to the beam of the hull, especially forward.  Plus they are very accurate.  Do as you are planning and get the boat weighed and measured.
