Pretty interesting.  15 months out and the race is already to a waitlist.  26 DH entries, which I believe is a record.  22 entries from the PNW, which is also a record.  24 boats signed up in the last 10 days!

There is a lot of pent up demand to go ocean racing!

And to spend money. Here in Ventura we have a member who was ready for the 2020 PAC Cup and he said the cost of the Safety Gear and work to meet the Safety Req for his SC27 was off the hook expensive. I'm sure he will go for the 2022 race as it is on his bucket list.

Certainly seems like the hardest part, as it often is, is getting to the start line.  This is year is definitely no exception.  In particular, insurance, and the cost of shipping have really put a damper on some plans.  We are sticking to our plan.  Heading down the coast around June 10th.

Prompted to look at entry list. Some things that stand out.

Pyewacket Vs Wizard.  That is going to be an interesting showdown to watch.

Several teams seem a little shy on crew.

Curious to see how Blue goes against the venerable J-125's.

We'll be there. Middle of the pack slower boat compared to the ultralights. Probably PHRF division, although we're right on the border of ORR. Probably better for us to be in PHRF as we can surf a bit on occasion, but that's it.

Last thing on the checklist is ensuring a good return crew, the boat will be sailed back.

Zvi is heading south the afternoon of June 9th. Hopefully catching the favorable outbound tide to Wilson.

It is amazing how hard it is to get to the start line for this.  A year ago we had 91 entries and a waitlist and now we are down to just 69 boats.  I thought for sure, with the cancellation of the 2020 race there would be bigger numbers this year, but it didn't happen.  I know a bunch of boats from the PNW have dropped out for various reasons.  

That said, class splits are up, along with the start days:

I think one of the most interesting days will be Thursday with 3 well sailed J/125s and Blue, the Riptide 41.  It will be interesting to see how the race to Hawaii suited J/125s go against the faster rated, but same length Blue.  Any bets?  

A number of the PNW boats are headed south in the next few days.  Trying to catch what is turning out to be a rare NW'ly this year.

Zvi pushed departure to late Friday to take advantage of the reaching and running. The forecasted 25-30kts run from Cape Mendocino to GG on Sunday will be fun.

Johnstone vs. Bieker? I see no issues mono y mono. B Boats are true rippers. Several levels above in design and build quality
On the other hand, J Boats has 3 opportunities (boats) to try and beat the Bieker to the island. Blue can't make any mistakes.
Doublehanded 1 and 2 are always interesting.
My money is on the Erkelens in Doublehanded 1. They know the drill.
Doublehanded 2 will also be a nice showdown also with the Carbon Antrim and the Donovan, both proven. That Pogo could be a dark horse.

Lots of interesting matchups throughout the fleet.

Gotta have the Erkelens as the ones to beat for DH1, though the rest of the Moores aren't too shabby either. Could see the E27's do well too, especially if it's a lighter year. I don't know much about the current owners, but Moonshine knows the way to Hawaii. The two heavier boats are also well prepped, Cruz Sea has been doing well in all the OYRA races, and Suprise! has some serious talent onboard. Easy division to pick the favorite in but easy to see opportunities for an upset.

Div A, gotta expect either the express or one of the Cal 40's to win it. Azure is my pick for that division.

DH2 is going to be fun to watch, 'Io is pretty frigging amazing, but I'm going with Wolfpack. Think it should be easier to sail at 100% compared to the Antrim or Pogo.

For Div B, I think the E37's will push each other to the front of the pack. I have Spindrift V to win, mostly because the rest of them will want to get to Hawaii so they don't have to listen to Andy's jokes anymore.

Div C, don't have a strong prediction: Picking one of the Olson's to win in a light year, or Vera Cruz or Hukalani to win if it blows.

Div D, Surprise to win. Strong crew, biggest boat in the division and they can square back and rumble.

Div E, going with Blue just cause its such a cool boat. Wouldn't be surprised to see one of the J-125 end up on top as long as their navigators can stay off parts of the internet they aren't supposed to look at ;)

Div F, have to expect the house of mouse to win, but would love to see Rage or Westerly correct out if they end up sailing in completely different conditions than the V70's.
