Div C - I would predict the opposite. Heavy boats that can't plane for a light year and Olsons if it is a windy year.
I may be traumatized by an Olson 30 nationals in Santa Cruz. We had the worst round down I've ever experienced, took forever getting back up and sorted, and went from 4th to 1st because everyone else had crashed even harder.

Oh Pac Cup. Or I should say, YRA. We had our boat weighed on Saturday. 9573. Brochure is 9300. So, you would think our downwind rating would go up from the base we were assigned before the weigh-in. Incorrect. We are now 9 sec/mi faster. Sigh. I know in the past YRA has said, the base rating assumes the boat weighs more than the brochure. That would/could make sense, except that YRA also rates the two-time J/111 World Champion boat, which has a measured weight of 9521 and now our downwind rating is faster than that boat. There were also boats at the last worlds that weighed exactly 9300. Such a fun puzzle.

I think Blue vs the 125's is kind of a Wild Oats vs Comanche situation? Blue must be inherently faster but the 125s should have a pretty wide performance envelope?

DH boats are still PHRF with the downwind rating. As long as the boat is weighed and measured it is eligible for the overall. Pretty sure they apply the PHRF downwind rating to all of the boats to determine overall.

Division D is kinda a hodgepodge of heavier boats and ULDB - but looking at the splits, I couldn't come up with anything better... I think we're the slowest downwind boat in our Div - so this is gonna be a challenge!

The weather is also getting very "interesting" in that the high is getting all flat. Yuck, but we have 2 weeks for it to rebuild itself.

Hey Roleur. I'll be on the Sydney 38 from South Puget Sound. ORR is new to me. Our boat became 240 lbs lighter from its last certificate AFTER we added an extra battery, significant electronics, autopilot, and heater. Who knew we were adding lightness!

We're really looking forward to the race. Our new spinnakers finally arrived...

Looking forward to meeting you as well. Good luck in the DH division!!!

Is that the old Bustin Loose? Hope you still have the big kites, should be tons of fun.

The weight loss is suspicious-I'm curious who prepped her for measurement before. There's a rigger in the bay with a history of boats he works on miraculously shedding pounds after a change of ownership, curious if this was another of his "optimizations":mad:.

Not sure what PAC Cup qualifies as a certified weight method but those Travel Lift scales are all over the place. Unless calibrated regulary, they are not an accurate form by any means.
Can't say about this years, but when we weighed, we were told it was a calibrated scale. Of course, then we got ORR measured so they measured freeboard and line drawings. The differences between the 2 were minimal, once I corrected an error made by the office on transposing a couple numbers (yeah, I'm not sure what's wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'd notice a 4,000 pound difference in weights) - Of course, before figuring that part out I had a heart attack as the boats calculated stability measurement wouldn't qualify to cross the marina, let alone an ocean...

One thing not accounted for when weighing by TravelLift is the angle of the dangle. The worst case is a narrow beamed boat in a wide lift at maximum lift height. Best case is a wide beamed boat in a narrow lift at the lowest lift height, just clear of the water at low tide. This is because the designer’s goal is cable tension not boat weight.

30° dangle angle from vertical gives a +15% reading error. Not an uncommon situation at all. 1/cos I would think. You can try explaining this to a yard worker at your peril.

Pay for the measurer’s scale if accuracy is important.

We've had 3 different boats weighed for Pac Cup. All have been done by the same person, with the same load cell, and always a single point lift. I don't see any issues there. Not all boats were weighed with this method though. All were done using some form of certified method, but not all the same load cell, and not 100% were lifted out of the water. Some were "weighed" using in the water measurements and hull lines to determine the displacement.

Yup. The old Bustin' Loose. Still running masthead kites and now masthead asymmetrical kites.
We received the water measurements and hull lines treatment. Not sure what was done in last round.
I'm not complaining. I'm too excited to just get to the damn start line!
