So much for the fun race to Hawaii.
Off topic, when calculating the ratings at the start of the race, I really did not want to believe that the Riptide owed the fastest rated J boat something on the order of 20 hours, but................

I did and he did and apparently they were since they retired immediately. I’m saying I don’t know and neither do they it’s been 8 years and I’ll leave it at that.

Having sailed a few 1000 miles on the old Derivative/Snoopy i can "weigh" in on the differences between 125s. I KNOW that some boats have had the headliners removed, all the wooden trim pieces replaced with carbon, looking at pictures of Hamachi and Rufless they both have removed the Metal hand rails and they both seem to have new sets of companion way stairs. And thats what easily seen, lithium batteries, and i am sure there are tons of other weight savings measures that have been done on the top boats.
I am fully aware of a J/125 that moves their pipe berths from side to side, so they only carry 2 and move them as needed to have both on one side, or split in the stern to have people sleeping in the proper place and not carrying the weight of 2 extra pipe berths.
It has been a few years since i have involved in the fleet but at that time NONE of the boats had been weighed recently even though some have been in pretty major diets. Until they all agree to weigh the boats, this will continue.

That was a really good race for us. As in, not too windy, which wouldn't have been so great. A few notables:
We sailed 300 extra miles, but kept moving well the entire time. Only 3 more miles than Pyewacket though. Made for a very pleasant race. We basically sailed down to the Transpac course and then went west.
First J/111 to race to Hawaii. The second J/111 to race to Hawaii is finishing as we speak (they started two days after us).
We finished a few hours faster in 2016 on a Schumacher 28. Wolfpack finished a full 3 days later than in 2016. It was not a fast race at all for the Monday/Tuesday starters. In fact, only half the fleet has finished 14 days after the first start.
The Hurricane Darby swells (highest surf in Hawaii in 50 years?) made the finish for most boats pretty epic. I've heard a few salty sailors say it was the largest waves they'd ever seen. Breeze was only low 20's for most, but I heard a 30 and a 40 in a squall near the finish too.
We were the first boat small enough to tie up to the bulkhead, so that is basically like winning it all! Yay!

Nice race! Bold moves in the beginning, very fun to watch.
Swing by and say hello! We got in tonight. I’m still buzzing but great race. Really challenging for a first time navigator. God damn round down was costly. 2am. Pinned down. Fuck. But we lived.
