Rocking is exactly what it sounds like, rock the boat and it moves forward.

In the Netherlands, older heavier dinghy often also have the oppertunity of wrikken. That works even better.

Nice.  I keep thinking that there ought to be some way to couple my folding bike to the boats regular shaft to get in some cardio and also a bit of propulsion when needed.  In sort of the way that my road bike fits on the rollers.  

Does anybody have the link to that young fellow who writes open source autopilot code and has almost circumnavigated his boat with nothing but a driftwood scull for auxiliary propulsion?  (Apparently can’t transit Panama with a driftwood scull… Or Cape Horn either.)

That is not the right number. 746 is correct. Unless uou mean metric hp which is weird.

ALWAYS Avoid using commas for decimals in international communications.   735,499W= 735kW in a large part of the world.

There is no real need for the numbers after the decimal point in this case (735Watts gets the point across just as well with less confusion.)

Even for people who know that the commas is a common decimal separator will have to think about this for a second.

This boat is gearing up for the R2AK so they are out testing and training for it. They sailed around Van Isle last year as practice for the offshore portions and look to be a team I would put money on winning it based on how much planning and effort they are putting in.

Are these systems usually fixed gear or freewheel? I could see all the benefits of a flywheel, but ouch. Set in a recumbent position there's a lot of overlap between the folks who can break oars and the folks who can crank watts. I can envision some pretty slick hackjobs with the newer electric drivetrains.

I built a pedal drive for this little day sailer. We did R2Ak in 2019 and we had a pedal drive for that boat. It made me a much better light air sailor as I really didn’t like to pedal. So we took advantage of the littlest breeze and sailed rather than getting on the pedal drive. When I was designing this boat I went with a pedal drive because I know myself well enough that if I have some motorized propulsion I’ll drop the sails and start it up rather than wait for the wind. It is good for improving my patience.
