It brings back memories, but on a much smaller scale. Thirty + years ago, Rob Mazza, Paul Roetsart, and I built 3 International 14's to Rob's design. At the time he was working in the design office at C&C.

We all had Kirby 5's at the time, and were looking for something to get competitive with the then "hot" Cross boats of the time. And Rob did a hell of a job giving us the Mazza 2, It was like going from an MG to a Ferrari.

They were designed to built in much the same way as Sliver, upside down and flipped at the appropriate time. I remember the time we spent getting the Jigs right (at Rob's insistence and direction) before we even contemplated cutting any wood. At that point he re-inforced the "measure twice, cut once rule". The day we took them off the Jigs, and flipped them over was a real milestone. They were West System with only 4 brass screws each at the stem. I became allergic to epoxy through the build and am to this day. I marvel at people that can work with the sfuff day to day.

The next best day was taking the windows out of the building we worked in to get the boats out, and then putting one in the water to see where it would float. To Rob's relief where it should without the rig, etc.

Kimb has reached a real milestone. I look forward to watching the rest of the build and remembering the fun we had a long time ago.

As an afterthough, I think we built the boats for about $1500 a piece which is a far cry from todays $ 30,000 + for state of the art.

For the next few months at least...I probably know this hull better than anyone & it's almost a spiritual piece. Bob may have drawn it, but I have run my hands over it (nananaaaanana) and it's nothing less than beautiful.

I can't wait to finish the twins and send them along.

Well that sure looks a lot less exciting than the old school method of getting a whole lot of guys together and plying them with beer until they think they can lift a huge hull and flip it over...

Sweet hull, the fun continues!

OK now that her hull is right side up the crew will install the cradle pieces to hold her gently as they sheath the interior of the hull, install the interior pieces and build and install the deck, cockpit, cabin house.

Here's a question:

How do they measure/cut each cradle to match the particular cross-section of the hull where the individual cradles are to be placed?

There is no measuring at all. It's all constructed in 3D on the computer by Jim Franken and he sends it for CNC cutting. It's an amazing process.

Yup, exactly what he said: Jim Franken the magic man just sends the file to Brandon Davis at Turn Point Design and the 5 axis CNC machine cuts them out perfectly. The entire boat is built in detail in Jim computer (Yes I have a back up copy) and he can just select what is necessary and after he applies his magic off the files go to Brandon. Thats also how we got those amazing wheels all developed, cutout and sent to the crew for assemply.

I once asked Jim how we knew the deck would fit the hull and his reply: "Kim, it is all the same computer file, of course it will fit."

Thanks for the pics. Pretty amazing process. Any sign of racking when she rolled? I suspect not but I tend to worry....
Not a peep! She is pretty stiff and solid even without the interior sheathing. Tim Nolan (our engineer) was there and we were looking and listening, but she did not complain a bit and when you think of it she is a box section which is pretty strong.

I specifically watched to see that the wheels turned together and I saw no lag at all.

I once had a consultation client who owned a well known semi production boat. He had becvome obsessed with the fact that his entire deck was off to one side as much as 4". He had 4" more side deck on one side than he had on the other. He liked the boat but he was worried about the asymetry. The builder reassurred him by telling him, "That's what you get when a boat is hand built." I didn't agree. I like precision. It would drive me crazy to think my mast was not centered over the keel.

.... it's the same file....

Years ago when I built computers we had a bug in the floating point math hardware of the CPU. It manifest itself by having parts of an airplane built by Boeing not come out exactly the right size. I'll never forget having to tell the team that we were going to have to send them a new computer CPU to fix the size problem they were having with the wing struts! YIKES!!!

Being old is fraught with nightmares....
