LIMA, Peru — Lawmakers voted Wednesday to impeach Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, hours after he declared that he was dissolving Congress and would rule the nation by decree.

The legislature had been scheduled to debate Castillo’s removal on corruption charges Wednesday afternoon, and the president said as recently as Tuesday evening that he would respect the process. His shock announcement during an unscheduled television address Wednesday morning drew widespread condemnation, spurred mass resignations from his cabinet and led lawmakers to bring the vote forward.

The civilian population has the right of insurgency in defence of the constitutional order. Acts of those who usurp public functions are null and void."

That's silly. No government would allow its citizens to decide their own fate through rebellion nor have an amendment about it or anything like that.

You should post that cute little phrase you use that states you are definitely not obsessed with the Second Amendment and only bring up guns once in awhile as a counterpoint and in context of Democrat gun grabbers

When considering the Peruvian coup, as with every other issue, it was inevitable that some grabber would once again bring up my heresy on TeamD gun bans and confiscation programs, so I decided to beat you to the punch this time. Sorry, but thanks for your continued interest in one (and only one) topic on which I post.

I'm starting from zero here. What is their Congress impeaching him for? He's only been there since July 2021. What's the backstory?
I can offer a text my future son-in-law sent as a nutshell explanation today, not sure which way his family leans but:

“””…the government in Peru was super corrupt to begin with and then this socialist mountain man won and everybody hates him because he’s trying to contain capitalism in an already “poor-ish” country.”””

Waack: Castillo was a disaster of dramaturgical proportions

In less than a year and a half he had appointed and dismissed five ministries, broken with old and new allies and never managed to create any stable base in a Congress in which he had no majority

It seemed like a tale from the rich Peruvian literature when a rural school teacher, Pedro Castillo, came to power.

Elected president of Peru far from the traditional Peruvian elites, with a political program taken from the old manuals of the Latin American popular revolts.

With his peasant sombrero and holding a Bible, he vowed to realize the dream of all that literature, popular emancipation - if not a revolution, at the same time mending the fractures of a deeply divided and polarized country.

Castillo was a disaster of dramaturgical proportions. In less than a year and a half he had appointed and dismissed five ministries, broken with old and new allies, never managed to create any stable base in a Congress in which he had no majority. And he was involved in corruption scandals.

And Peru, already in a strong economic crisis, entered an environment of political drift in which 80% of the population did not trust either the president or the Congress.

Even around the first peasant to be president of Peru, few people believed that Castillo was the victim of a conservative rage.

He was a victim of his own political incapacity, which culminated in a crude coup attempt.

Castillo's trajectory qualifies him to become a character in one of those famous Peruvian novels. But it failed to impress one of Peru's most prominent writers, Mario Vargas Llosa. Castillo is simply an illiterate, said Llosa.

In Peru they are calling it a "tragicomic coup":

"The tragicomic coup d'état of Pedro Castillo that took him straight to prison"

"In just three hours, the fate of the professor from Chota changed. His attempt to close the Congress led to his dismissal and his arrest before he could get to the Mexican embassy. At night, he was imprisoned in Barbadillo prison together with Fujimori."

Plenty of memes:

Reading the news back a year, I get the impression that for all Castillo's supposed intelligence, he really didn't seem to know what a President does, and didn't actually do the job.

We had the same thing, except the intelligence thing. He's still running around causing problems and undermining the government.

Sad when Peru seems to have a more functional democracy than the U.S.

"Since he took office in July 2021, Castillo's administration has been a chaotic mess of far left infighting, endless corruption scandals and ineptitude. All the while, the president largely ignored the poor who he frequently claimed to represent."

Pedro Castillo was drugged when he announced the dissolution of Congress, said congressman Guido Bellido, a party ally and former prime minister of Castillo.

The congressman indicated that he suspects that the document was drafted by a group of people, among them, former premier Betssy Chávez.

"He does not remember (anything), he told me so in his own words. He says: 'I do not remember that I have read (the message to the Nation where the closing of the Congress was ordered). That is his answer and it must be respected", he declared to the media outside the Diroes where he went to visit the former president.
...
The legislator said that he found it strange that "a president, who was not going to be impeached (for lack of votes), ends up giving the arguments for his impeachment".

"By the way, ... it is noted that Pedro Castillo reads practically shaking. There are elements to be able to request a toxicological examination to know if any substance was used to achieve that reading", he added.

He also indicated that Pedro Castillo may not necessarily have been drugged, but they could have used any element so that his capacities are not at 100% because it is surprising that in his right mind he would act outside the norm.
...

Pedro Castillo refuses to undergo a toxicology test

According to the portal Epicentro TV, Pedro Castillo refused to undergo the toxicology test requested by his defense, after claiming that the former president of Peru "does not remember" the message announcing the closing of the Congress of the Republic.
