In the past I've always thought you were a shit interviewer, but you did a fantastic conversation here with Brian.

Thanks.

Thanks for the interview.

Really enjoyed it on my long bus trip.

mp3 file was great.

But I must say that you do very little editing :D (or I must say none)

Thanks Mr Clean, great interview. I have been travelling so missed the opportunity to post some questions but one in particular should have been asked. Umpire's about the closer end of the finish line! Lizard end was about 60nm closer so did'nt they care or was going to the Ushant end better for the sponsors, and the PR machine. Even at 30kts thats still an extra 2 hours. Also re the 24 hour record, which was asked, surely if she has done a 908nm 24 hour then the 1000 is possible and even the 1nm record could be done surfing 1 wave at the appropriate angle.

From what Brian said I think that you have guessed the answer to the finish.

2 quotes form Brian - 'We were not ogin for the fastest possible time, but for the Jules Verne'

and 'Banque Populaire do not operate outside France so there is no benfit to them in promoting outside of the country'

Thus, a few hours extra on the record was nothing important, but finishing near france was...

Sorry trimariner - once we hit the one-hour mark I had to cut the questions, so my apologies. I think Potter's got it though, without question.

Actually I edited out about 14 minutes, but only in big chunks.

But it doesn't matter - the only way to get a one hour interview published the same day online in both audio and video formats is to not be too picky about your editing (or to spend thousands on multiple editors to keep the time down). I could make it great if I had another four days - but I don't!

Glad you enjoyed.

I have looked at bit further into it and while the Jules Verne rules are "a line between Creac'h light-house and the Lizard" the WSSRC rules are different:

To sail around the World, a vessel must start from and return to the same point, must cross all meridians of longitude and must cross the Equator. It may cross some but not all meridians more than once (i.e. two roundings of Antarctica do not count). The shortest orthodromic track of the vessel must be at least 21,600 nautical miles in length calculated based on a 'perfect sphere'. In calculating this distance, it is to be assumed that the vessel will sail around Antarctica in latitude 63 degrees south.
While Helen McA, having left from the Lizard, could go back to the Lizard, BPV having left from the Créac'h end had to go there, for the WSSRC if not not for the JVT !

Thks Clean for the ITW

It's great when someone pauses after being asked a question, it means that they have paid attention and want to give a decent informative answer - rather than just spouting off what they want everyone to hear.

Brian comes over as very genuine

Good work Clean

Very interesting and deep interview. That's unusual enough in todays media to notice!

Brian really seems a good guy, and I wish him all the best in finding a sponsor for the next Vendee. Maybe he should look at French large companies in the UK trying very hard to be more "british". Like EDF Energy for instance

So, they could open up the Jules Verne Trophy to POWERBOATS!

That would be a good PR stunt for sailing

only if you have a really long and complicated set of rules that ban things like hydraulic rams for canting keels, or powered winches. ie no hybrids! either all out sailing or all out powerboating

Great and detailed interview, thanks. Hopefully Brian will get his crack at the solo multihull record.
