Do you drive a car?  When behind the wheel we put ourselves and others at risk but we still drive.  This whole thing is overblown and there are real consequences to stripping rights and livelihoods from people.
Overblown?...except for the real consequences...and stripping lives and families away.

Question for you...do you drive an invisible car?

BOLD has been anchored in our harbor (Rockport Maine), for 3 days now. 279' long, BOLD charters for 1 mil/week. Her last port was NYC on the 13th. My son rigging his boat on the public docks said and inflatable (from BOLD) landed and crew and clients went ashore, yesterday, the 17th.

Some will play by the rules (honor system), some will not. Our harbor is open for visiting boats, restrooms and harbormasters building are closed to the public. But you can get provisions delivered, water from the docks, etc.

We've been seeing an influx of people throughout this pandemic, but most newcomers - quarantined or not (who knows that?) - are using good judgment. Our sheer lack of numbers of people is low here - so far. We're doing pretty well. However the real exodus is coming at the end of the month. Heat will drive people North, pandemic, or not.

The bigger problem I see locally, are those that are ignoring simple procedures like masks in lumber suppliers and the like. These are local people unfortunately, and sadly taking the political path, which is to oblivion.

I know you know this, but sometimes the owner of a boat actually uses it...

True and the actual owner and crew may have quarantined out at sea 2 weeks prior to leaving NYC (not going ashore in the interim). I give people the benefit of the doubt. It wouldn't be a hard vessel to spend time on. BOLD steamed out today and looked to be heading downeast.

    Got this today:

Dear Sailors and Friends,

Since 1985 the ERR has held onto the belief that it should not be difficult to have a sailboat race.  After this spring, many of us are looking forward to sailing more than ever.

The ERR will be held this year on Saturday August 1st.

We will race the familiar course, but all shore side activities are canceled.

Friday evening will be anchored in Great Cove as usual and Saturday evening will look much like Friday. We have committed to stay entirely off WoodenBoat’s campus and shore. This eliminates all use of WoodenBoat; whether by spectators, picnickers, or racers and eliminates use of bathrooms, camping, vehicle access, and walking to town across their property. Plan to be onboard the boats both nights or to sail to another harbor after racing.

We may do some impromptu dinghy racing and we are sure you all know how to enjoy an evening anchored among a fleet of beautiful boats.

Registration is as usual. Skippers packets, T-shirts and hat sales will be by email and mail.

The skipper’s meeting will be by VHF.

Dinner, beer, and music is BYO.

Awards will be either on VHF or from the deck of the Committee Boat, the William Underwood.

Please submit a 2020 CRF rating. We are part of the 2020 CYOA Classic Yacht Challenge- the other events can be found on their website. www.classicyachts.org

Our expenses are reduced. The registration fee is reduced from $88 to $50. If you have already paid it, we will send a partial refund. We will also refund any dinner tickets you have purchased.

All profit will be donated to WoodenBoat School as a thank you for many years of allowing us to use their grounds. The contributions of WoodenBoat to this community are hard to overstate.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Great Cove. Be well.

The ERR

Without camping at Woodenboat, I wonder if some crews will be reduced. We will be well done with our Q-period by then, but will have to rely on Mainers for crew. Geez, that's not exactly a hardship. B)

KK, Ajax, Elegua, let's watch how this CoV develops, but keep in mind the possibility of bringing your own bedrooms and sailing on Restive, ladies welcome.

I expect that races "sans socials" will be the model on the Chesapeake as well.  Frankly, racers have been dipping the finish line and burning for the barn for years, leaving the after-party as a thinly attended snore-fest, anyway.  Eliminating the expense of food, booze, tents and music and just mailing the trophies will greatly simplify things for the hosts.

It's amazing. I've only been racing for 10 years and in that short time, I've seen a great deal of change in the bay racing scene.  When I first started, crews still slept on boats, everyone went to the parties, drank and actively socialized. People willingly used vacation days to attend multi-day racing events. Governor's Cup was a "big deal."  Screwpile was huge.

For me, the after party was the fun reward for sitting on the rail, staying up all night and skipping meals. I'd walk the docks checking out the more unfamiliar boats, asking questions of the crew and gettin' my rum on.

People barely speak to each other anymore and that was before the pandemic.

The spectacle of the ERR, at least for us, was being there as the entire fleet of beautiful boats descended - near-simultaneously - upon the anchorage.

There's no better pastime for a sailor than to watch boats and crews anchor, raft, roll out bimini's, and thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie that racers do. We enjoyed our self-isolation in the midst of the spectacle.

We've been to the Wooden Boat School several times, that's best toured during quiet times when classes are in session. Despite Covid-19, it will still be worth dropping anchor if you're near the Eggemoggin Reach.

Did not manage to go sailing (yet), but at least could reach the boat and do some chores I needed to, while the admiral, with her mask, took some pics.

I've given up on New England this year.  If I still have a job in February, I'll plan on doing it in the summer of 2021.

I think we may, too. Given the restrictions - if we go to Maine we have to basically stay aboard for 2 weeks, no walking around Camden, SW Harbor, NE Harbor, or Castine, takes art gallery hopping away from the bride.

If we sail to P-town we can't go into town. Same with Newport.

Really not much sense in sailing this summer.

We'll decide in the next couple of days whether to launch at all.

I believe quarantine restrictions in RI elapsed on Monday (June 1).  Mass's should elapse by the end of June.  I do not know about Maine's requirements.

For out of state visitors? We're from Texas.

RI's dept of health right now still expects out of state visitors to quarantine for 14 days. I just visited their website.

This from the Mass website: All travelers arriving to Massachusetts are instructed to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Maine is working on something to replace the 14 day quarantine for out of state visitors. Also there was an article in the Bangor daily news about out of staters liking the idea of a quarantine but not doing it when visiting. So there’s that I guess

Mass (where I live) will most likely go into Phase 2 on Monday (June 8), with plans to go into Phase 3 on Monday June 29th.  Travel with quarantine is permitted again in Phase 2, and Phase 3 should eliminate the quarantine requirement.  TBH, summer tourism is a massive part of the economy in certain places like Cape Cod that have not been hit particularly hard.  I know there is a lot of pressure out there to have some sort of functioning summer economy, and my guess is the worst case scenario is that we see the Cape and Islands open up, with metro Boston access still limited.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/05/18/metro/look-what-can-reopen-each-phase-massachusetts-opening-plan/

RI is already in their Phase 2.  Quarantine is now required only for visitors from states with active stay-at-home orders (right now only NY and NJ).  I have a vested interest in this as a Mass resident who owns a boat that is kept in RI, and it will be nice to stay on her, which I know I now can.  So you're fine there.

" For domestic travel, mandatory self-quarantine rules now apply only to people coming from places that still have a stay-at-home order in place. "

Block Island is even starting to re-open.

Yeah. We live on a main pedestrian/bicycling pathway and street, in a small town that's in a touristy area. We can gauge new arrival numbers easily. We know a lot of them and many are new.

If I took a guess on #'s that have done a 14 day Q, I'd have to say less than 50%.

The truth is, I don't know if I could have done it. Having said this, everybody, especially newbs. are taking the situation seriously and acting accordingly with masks anywhere you can't keep a safe distance. I heard someone went ballistic in a local lumber supply as many, customers and staff alike, were maskless. Pretty dumb, so easy to do for a few minutes.

Some things have opened up a bit but it's still all take-away food, limited numbers in stores, etc.

Boats are starting to fill in our harbor.  We have a launch date 3rd week of June. I don't see too many reasons for us not to take off for a few weeks, maybe a month. It will be different but we're indoctrinated to the new way here, because we live here.
