Putin is losing his war badly, so bad he threatened nukes. What should the response be if he does?

Does anyone seriously think that Putin has not been told - via back channels - what will happen if he uses a nuke?

Also, he may order it but someone else has to push the button - didn't work in '62.

One of the sincere criticisms of gov't is that a hell of a lot of things that make a hell of a lot of sense somehow get overlooked, a hell of a lot of the time..

This could be one. I hope not!

1) a good percentage of Russia's nukes are probably non functional
2) the US military knows where every one of them is, and has a launch plan ready to go that will send high-speed cruise missiles to take out every launch site
3) a Russian nuclear strike is unlikely anyway, as even if Putin orders one there are people in the chain of command that will probably stop it
4) Putin is likely to experience his own brand of special tea, or a failed balcony railing in the near-ish future anyway

That nothing is off the table if a country that has nukes is invaded is actually the normal condition. People seem to be reading too much into Putin's statement, it does not appear to be a threat to use nukes in Ukraine.

The Russian proclivity to self-defenestration is quite startling.

The kind of nuke in question here are mobile launched from trucks so launch sites are not a known known - more of a known unknown.

Russia is a 6 foot 4 250 pound guy who went into a bar, picked a fight with a 5 foot 6 150 pound guy, totally got his ass kicked all over the bar, tripped over a barstool and went face-first into a bowl of nachos, and then got kicked in the nuts by the waitress.
Russia now has pulled out a .45 and is threatening to shoot the 5'6" guy and doesn't realize the bartender has a double-barrel 12 gauge loaded with buckshot aimed at his back.
Right now Russia looks like an utter pussy for losing the fight and an utter pussy squared for a pulling a gun.

Yeah but the bit you missed is, the bully is also wearing an impact-triggered suicide vest, so while shooting him is satisfying, it's also suicidal.

Which is not to say that Russia can get away with shit by threatening nukes, just that the response needs to be nuanced.

Keep Putin and Ukraine bogged down in the disputed territory until march 24 next year.
See what the Russian people think of Putin's war.
Will he stay or will he go?
Frankly, it the Russian people vote to ditch Putin, but Putin refuses to go, we have no moral authority to use Nukes against the Russian people.

NATO will have to slog in out using conventional weapons.
Or better still, I'm pretty confident that at least one the combined leaders of the world Knows where Putin is. If Putin loses the Election and refuses to go, Take him out.

It could always be the case that the election IS Putin's escape strategy and he intends losing.

Patience.
